Starting/Driving the car

This is my first BMW. I have been driving/starting the car without putting the key in the holder under the push start/stop button. Is this ok to do or should i keep it in there????

I think you have Comfort Access. Do take full advantage of this feature. It's designed to work this way. In case you don't know, you don't need to press any of the buttons on your key to lock/unlock the car. Just tap on the door handle and it will lock/unlock. (Touch the part just above the keyhole on the door handle).

You should put the key fob in the slot a couple times per year though. This keeps the fob charged.

You must have comfort access for $500. Enjoy it.

I think that confort access FOBs need new batteries after a while. Non-comfort access FOBs are rechargable.

I'll check with my SA again. He told me the reason the slot was in the dash with CA was solely to recharge the fob. Makes sense, considering there is no need for the slot with CA.

I have Comfort Access and my keys have no metal contacts on them for the part that would be inserted into the slot. Thus, there is no way to charge these keys.

No metal contacts necessary. The charging is via induction.

Edit: what I meant is that the lack of metal contacts proves nothing, since the non-comfort access key doesn't have metal contacts either -- it recharges by magnetic induction.

Actually, with Comfort Access, touching the ridges above the keyhole locks the doors. If you keep your finger on the ridges for a few seconds, the power mirrors will fold in. To unlock, just grab the door handle.

The non-comfort access key definitely recharges in the slot (via induction).

The comfort access key (which I have) contains a replaceable battery. There was a lengthy debate a while ago over in the bimmerfest forum about whether the comfort access key can nevertheless be recharged by being inserted into the slot. I think the answer is no.

I am almost positive that CA fobs do not have rechargeable batteries.

Yes, I'm sure I read this in the manual but as I don't have CA, I didn't take terribly much notice of it.
