DCT downshift protection?
Evening all,
I have just returned to the E92 M3 (DCT version this time) but I have a bit of a concern over the DCT gearbox when downshifting and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I was having a play around the other day and coming down through the gears on a sharp bend I went down into second and then tapped down into first gear, I realised instantly and tapped back into second. I was doing around 40mph which is redline territory for first gear and this was a bit of a concern. I have always used manual gear boxes so the DCT gear box is all new to me (although I am loving it so far). My question is, does the engine protect against redline downshifts; accidental in this case? I was lucky to be just under the cut off but I can't imagine it did the engine any good in the process. Cheers. |

It will let you shift as long as you are at or before redline. Its perfect in my view. Takes the fear of driving manual and downshifting just at too high rpm. I like that it let's you downshift even if it will put you at redlune. I like the full control. I will downshift if it will put me at 7000 or below as this gives the whole power band. If I'm going to drop gear and be st 8k, then the 2 shifts outweigh any short gain

Here is some worthwhile reading on the transmission. Your question is addressed on page 6 at the bottom of the page. You will find that there is "money shift protection". There are plenty of other interesting facts included that will help you with the technology. http://www.m3post.com/goodiesforyou/mdctinfo.PDF As a transmission instructor I have enjoyed every minute of my 5.5 years with the M-DCT. Sometimes I still take the long way home. |
