New (to me) jack stand design
I've been looking for a low-profile jack stand as added insurance when jacking my car at the track for wheel/tire changes. Most I've seen online either look too flimsy or are too high of a profile for this application. Then I ran across this--brilliant! (scroll through the whole page of pics and descriptions):

I also just noticed that they're 12.25" high, even with the low-profile jack pad, so they require you to jack the car up pretty high to get them in position--certainly higher than you would need for wheel swaps. Based on my measurement, a 9.5-10" height would be ideal. Anyone know of high-quality, stable wide-based jack stands with that low of a profile? Last edited by paradocs98; 04-08-2012 at 08:48 PM.. |

I have a set with low profile pucks I use on a racecar, they work well, but I don't use them often.

I've seen that - Not my favorite design but it's something new at least.

How high are the stands...don't see that spec.
I have 3 harbor freight jacks...makes it easy and quick to put my pretty low 330 on jackstands. If you use the coupon, all 3 cost $180 + tax. With that setup, you're talking about close to $1k with the stands and their jack. (of course, could use a cheaper jack). Even then, I'd rather just spend the extra money on a Maxjax...$2400 new but would be so worth it.

12.25" high. I wish it were a bit lower, because based on my measurements, 12" is pretty high in the air for just a tire change.
I see your point about using three cheap jacks to get the car up on stands all around pretty quickly, but part of the novelty or attraction of this particular jack stand is that it allows you to jack on the actual jacking points as well as use those same jacking points for the jack stand location. I've always been nervous about the prospect of sliding a jack all the way under the front end to find that puck at the back of the engine or using that location by the diff out back. Too afraid I'd screw something up. You're right--a scissor lift would be much better, but obviously not track-friendly. |

I have a set of 4 with the low profile pucks. It is very difficult to use traditional jackstands on the GT3RS. I used these to change the entire rear susp. linkage recently. The height is not super high, but you can get a 2" lumber underneath them (or even thicker) depending you jacks.

You can use their low pad model and with the alignment pin, it keeps the BMW recangular pad aligned properly. I happened to have the owner/designer of these here in my office about half of today. It's a family friend that makes these. We'll be showing them on some BMW's soon so you can see how it works with the BMW jackpoints. They aren't cheap, but work GREAT.

As stated above, you could just buy 2 to 4 Harbor Freight $59 aluminum jacks and a set of inexpensive standard Y or flat top jack stands to put under the car for added insurance once it is raised on the jacks.

Well the main concept of these is you raise the car, and put the car on the purposed jack points on the chassis. They are about the most stable jackstands i have ever seen. Its one of those concepts you have to see in person once to have an "oh wow, that works great" feeling.

That is just plain genius. Let us know when you have an M3 version (s65).

I like the concept, good idea. The only thing lacking to prove its strength (stands), is some kind of report/certificate on the maximum load one stand will take before it starts to fail. I know it passes ANSI cert. (as stated), but that open side design just make you worry looking at it.
