Not totally stupid. It managed to get the M3 coupe off of the local gas guzzler tax list here this year. My salesman was surpised when he made out the order. It saved me $2k. E93 M3 is still on the list due to weight.

i have an 08, and I would like this feature. I doubt the wear is significant at any point below 150k miles.

Damn that woulda been nice. $1500 gas guzzler tax in the US, even with it

If you think it's stupid, consider that in Europe lots of people have been starting and stopping their engines manually at lights in the city for years, so for them it's a valuable convenience feature. For us, it defaults to disabled so quit yer bitchin'.

I hate this freaking feature and agree with you. If 3% if a big deal for alot of you than sell your car and wait for the 6 cylinder M to come out.

I don't know about you but a car that start and stop 30 times a day has to be worst off than one that does it once or twice a day. Just my 2 cents.

Can you please clarify? In my E93 (built after September production) the feature is turned off by default. Is it turned "on" by default in your car?

Given that he's paying in Pounds, I'd guess he's in England, where it's on by default along with the rest of Europe.
Sure would make sense for it to be a user choice like DRLs, pathway lighting, triple blink, etc.

Right... but if it it's possible - I wonder if the BMW dealer will switch it for me? I don't know my local dealer's service group very well. Are they normally open to this kind of thing?

I'd guess a dealer wouldn't normally mess with it, but an independent shop or tuner would probably do it cheap if they know how.

They are independently coding M3 with all sort of stuff, I'm sure that is as easy as a code change. search other threads for "coding" I remember not too long ago there was a thread about a website that gives you DIY instructions.

The quote I got was from the dealership. That being said I tried a different dealership initially and they told me its not possible.

I was under the impression it would not turn off if actively running AC to reach set cabin temp:

Driving comfort and driving safety are not affected by the Auto Start Stop function. The function is not activated, for example, until the engine has reached the ideal running temperature. The same applies if the air conditioner has not yet brought the cabin to the desired temperature, if the battery is not adequately charged or if the driver moves the steering wheel

But my hood won't close after i opened it..... more problems for me...

nope, not stupid at all, you read the manual instead of posting a quick question on here or thread saying "my car stops and starts at every stop light". That shows actual intelligence.

I read on here that auto start/stop feature is by default off when you first start the engine. In your case I would say it isn't?

Can someone confirm this?

I might be wrong here but...in the US it's off by default (light on). But some countries outside of the US may have the auto start/stop feature on by default (light off). Perhaps the member accidentally/unknowingly turned the feature on.

IIRC, auto start/stop feature began in US 2011.5 models...
