Can the e92 335i take on the e46 M3 from 0-60mph?

It's the e92 335i 300hp/300ft lb vs. e46 M3 333hp/262 ft lb. People said torque will get you there and hp will keep you there. From 0-60mph, 335i M in 5.3s tested by BMW AG while the M3 in 4.8s tested by BMW NA (for different roads & different conditions, a few tenth-second difference is expected normally) according to the BMW website.
The 335i has more torques and but less hp compared to the M3. Can it beat the M3 from 0-60mph. Remember the video between Merc AMG 55, V8 and BMW M5, V10, the AMG beat the M5 every time because of torques. What is your opinion?

Can't see how BMW would allow it, so no for me.

The new M5 would eat the 55 AMG all day long...I've seen videos of it before

Here we expect it will

But then again we are at 5,500feet above sealevel, so the M3 Normally aspirated engine looses about 20% of its power whille the 335i should keep almost all its power due to the turbo's

Wow, so the difference btw the 330 and the 335 will be pretty substantial for you guys in J'berg. I guess the folks in Denver will be similarly pumped to get the 335.

Yeah, I can't wait for the 335i to come out, but I don't think it will be able to take down an e46 M3. I am sure in a lot of everyday situations, the 335i will feel as fast (or faster) than the M3, but in a heads-up race, especially on a road course, the M3 will be on top. But, I guess i am a little biased!

I don’t have figures in front of me but I think the M3 is lighter than the 335. More HP and a little lighter will make up for that extra torque. M3 will win but the 335 shouldn’t be too far behind. Put them through corners and the upgraded M components should outperform the 335 around any track.

Bang for your buck as an everyday driver the 335 will win that comparison.

I wonder if it won't be a big seller in NM or AZ (the desert) where heat soak will decrease performance.

No, a M3 will win in any situation against the 335i.

Why don't we wait for the 335i to actually come out before we make any assumptions on straight line speed. Horsepower numbers can be very decieving on paper, ESPECIALLY from BMW.

But as far as handling goes, the M should take it in the twisties.

my stock '02 6 speed M3 ran 13.0's... in fact 8 during the same day. i doubt the 335 would be capable of those times.

dyno'd at 290.

I think the M3 will still be faster. It seems that BMW are probably even more conservative with the power ratings of the M cars. Based on the numbers I've seen, even though the E90 330 has more HP than an E36 M3 (255 vs. 240), the E36 M3 is still faster.

The 335 will have incredible performance, but I don't think BMW will allow a "regular" model exceed the capabilities of thier M car so soon.

Does anyonre know where the peak figures occur at what rpms? this is important and could be the end factor.

Don't forget turbo lags, and there's no lag in the M3.

The E46 M3 will beat the 335i, no doubt. However, spend a few hundred bucks on an ECU chip and then we have a match, if not a win, for the 335i. But talking just standard production cars, I expect the E46 M3 to be .3 to .5 seconds faster than the 335i. But then again, its a good 12k-14k more expensive, both fully loaded.

WHICH M3 ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THE 335 MIGHT BE FASTER THEN THE E46 M3 BUT MIND YOU THE 335 WILL HAVE A FEW YEARS OF ENGINE TECHNOLOGY ON THE E46 M3.

IM SURE THE 325 CAN DO AN E30 M3 IN A STRAIGHT LINE...BUT LETS NOT FORGET.......REAL MEN/CARS EXCELL IN THE CORNERS.

Uhh...no E55 is much faster. I've seen it myself and even the specs show it.

While the M5 feels extremely fast when driving it, the E55 feels like a rocket launcher. 0-60 is faster, 1/4 mile is faster, the M5 can't catch up after that even though the M5 has more hp cause the E55 is too far away.
With the ECU tuned, the E55 has about 530hp, so then the M5 can't match the hp either.

I'd take the M5 over E55 anyday, but in a straight line, it's no match.

blah. Do cars lose HP as they get older? If so, then wouldnt a 335i be just as fast as a 2002 m3 because of that? just curious

Yeah, if you never maintain it ever. The loss is minimal at best, unless you're at like...500K miles or something.

The nature of the M5 engine puts it at a disadvantage if the race is from standstill. It takes awhile to get up to the high rpms where it really excels. From standstill, the E55 will probably get ahead with its truckload of torque, but the M5 will reel it in and overtake if the race is allowed to get into triple digit speeds. From a roll, the M5 will very probably win.

With a chip and even just removal of the charcoal filters (USA spec), the M5 can gain 20-50 hp. I'm like you, I'd prefer to be in the M5 just for the throttle blip as you downshift with the SMG to prepare for the coming S turns. I wouldn't want to be in an E55 in that situation.

Back to topic, for a stock 335i vs a E46 M3, the M3 will win hands down. However, the turbo should respond better with a bit of aftermarket stuff. It'll make a great sleeper.

The HP 's kinda BS in M5, 31 HP more, ~ 70 lbs less, but got beaten every time by the E55 AMG. I can see that 133 lb-ft could make the huge difference in that race.

E55 AMG
5.5L 24-valve V-8 engine
469 hp @ 6,100 rpm
516 lb-ft @ 2,650 - 4,500 rpm
0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds

M5
5.0L V-10/4 engine
500 hp @ 7,750 rpm
383 lb-ft @ 6100 rpm
0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds

Well, that's 133 lb-ft. For only 38 lb-ft more, I don't think the 335i can take one the M3. However, it should be a close race.
