If tire and location allow for a patch, you can do that but I believe you lose a speed rating on the tire when you patch.

If its too close to the sidewall you will need a new tire.

I am not responsible for any action you may take ... This is my personal experience. I had a nail on the front driver's side shoulder and the dealer refused to patch it. I got a sausage and patched it myself. I have done two track events and touchwood so far I haven't had any issues. For me it was a such a waste of a tire to replace. These are my DD tires and still using them.

I am not advising you to do this.

that is brave. There's no problems patching tires, but doing track days on a patch is questionable.

Agreed, risky, don't do it. But absolute worth it to patch your street tires.

How old is your car? If you or previous owner bought it new and you purchased a tire and rim warranty package you will be good for a free replacement.

You patched on the edge of the tire?
That's not recommended, but probably ok for street driving, but track driving??

Some say to patch and plug.

If it's on the tread, that is a colossal waste of money.

If the damage is in the tread and not the sidewall, there is nothing wrong with patching it. I've been patching tires for years and never had an issue.

If it is in the tread area, a patch on the inside and a plug in the hole will be a reliable long-term repair. A plug from the outside only should be regarded as a temporary repair. If it is on the sidewall, you need a new tire.

New patches combine the plug:

I had an old style plug that held fine at first, and it leaked after a brief romp over 120mph.

But the Plug/Patch Combo has held just fine. I probably won't track on it. Seems like a high risk for how little it costs to replace a single tire.

I had a screw embedded in one of my rear tires. It was in the tread, and when I pulled it out it didn't go near deep enough to cause any sort of leak (kinda just flattened into the tread @ a shallow angle). You may want to see if this is the case for you. Otherwise ya I'd do what the other posters have said. Plug if in tread, sidewall=new tire.

In my case the tire was so bald that I just bought new ones anyway. No idea how long this screw was actually embedded in my tire lol, didn't cause any issues.

Just FYI: go to a reputable shop if you're going to patch it. I had mine patched at a local Just-Tires shop and they left my LM rim side wall all scraped up, had to learn this the hard way.

I hate hearing stuff like this.

Could be worse: I brought mine in to have it patched this AM and Sears ruined the tire completely. Now I'm stuck waiting a couple days to get a replacement for both rears while my car sits out in the open at Discount Tire for little old ladies to ding at their leisure.
