With the way this week has been,I decided that that I needed to live on the edge tonight for a bit so as it was raining I turned the DSC off

The wheelie part is not a problem,but I am one of those guys that rides in full gear the majority of the time.I have slid down the road too many times in full gear as it is!

I can't believe somebody would turn off traction control, a feature that doesn't even exist on most cars. What are you trying to prove?

I turned it off @ AutoX which is the perfect place to see how the car reacts w/out the nanny but turning it off in the rain is just silly unless of course your in a parking lot doing donuts

Actually, traction control is on virtually every auto now sold in the U.S. DSC (dynamic stability control) is an entirely different system, which works along side basic traction control systems, and applies braking to one of more of the 4 wheels based upon sensor data which detects one or more of the wheels losing traction in a turn. It is very effective in correcting for driver error, when the car is placed in a situation beyond it's grip envelope. It also counteracts the effects of over- or understeer, which can cause loss of control.

If you never place the car in a situation beyond it's performance capability, you will never know whether DSC is on or off. 99% all drivers, short of pro- or semi-pro drivers, are much faster with DSC on in a competitive mode (M-drive) because grip generally equates to more speed, loss of grip, equates to slower lap times, or worse. On the street, the majority, driving semi-sanely, will never see it except in panic situations, such as suddenly swerving to avoid a collision, where it can save your rear.

The U.S. Gov. has mandated that all cars must be sold with DSC by 2012 or so, because it dramatically cuts down on roll-over accidents. Today, it is on most high-end autos and SUVs.

I am not trying to prove anything but the fact that get the most out out of this car or any car for that matter,you have to be able to find the edge of grip to maximize the cars potential.DSC or MDM does not allow that to happen.And besides playing at the limit and reeling it back in is one of the real joys of driving wet or dry.On track the nannies are always turned off in any car that I am driving.
My 1st car racing was in a Lotus Cortina in studded ice racing in Quebec and it was normal for all us of growing up to go out in the snow and slide around and try to better each other on car control.I have done a few track days in the wet on my Duc and if you think a 400 bhp car is an issue,try a 160bhp 400 lb bike in the wet!
I do leave my DSC on 99% of the time on the street but If you really want to know what your car does at the limit,do yourself a favour and turn the stability system off in a controlled enviorment.

LOL . . . by "never know" I mean you'll never experience system engagement even on the track, unless you are driving 9-10/10ths. In other words, the car will behave exactly the same with your little DSC light on or off., unless you are near or entering a loss of control situation.

The M controls in BMW and "competitive mode" in Corvettes, for example, control the amount of sensitivity, and hence the level of intervention.

Even my F150 has stability & traction control and yes I do turn that off in the snow so I can have fun

I do agree with you completely, but the ONLY place to learn that is on a skidpad, or better yet, go to a high-performance driving school. I've been to several, and they are expensive, but what you learn and experience is incredible. Most start by asking everyone in the class who rates themselves as an excellent driver. Those who raise their hands are usually humbled very quickly by the professional instructor.

If you do turn it off on the track, you have to be prepared to accept the possibility of getting intimate with either a wall or the weeds. That happens even to the very best of the best pros. Even DSC won't save you in some situations, if you really screw up.

I said virtually every car NOW sold in the U.S. I didn't mean the 1998 Cavalier someone bought recently. Only a relatively few (usually higher-end cars) are equipped with DSC, which is not the same as basic traction control. As the mandatory deadline for DSC-equipage gets closer, you'll start seeing more and more, such as the F-150 noted above.
