Yeah, actually this might be a very good choice and used will be at the OPs price point. The exterior is a little much for my taste but the interiors are well done. They have excellent steering feel and the power is big time. A bonus is they can reliably hold (some) more power and attain it easily with a pulley swap.

good post. i have seen this happen before, and it happened to me on my e46.

if you like really fast cars buy something thats either FI or has a monster v8 already. that way you can still mod it for more power if thats your thing, but can do it in a safer, less complex and cheaper way.
