Cracked Oil Pan!

I was driving home last night and ran over a huge unavoidable rock in the road. It didn't hit my front bumper but hit a secondary bumper under the car and popped up and cracked my oil pan. I drove ~2 blocks (~1 minute) to a gas station to examine the damage and saw that there was a trail of oil all the way back to the accident. I turned my car off immediately. No warning lights ever came on but there was a little smoke inside the car and a slight burning smell. There wasn't any noticeable smoke outside the car and it only smoked for a minute. I didn't hear any unusual noises and never turned the car back on. The remaining oil spilled out of the car over the next hour.

I think my insurance will cover the repairs after a ~$500 deductible. The dealer told me over the phone that a new oil pan with oil and labor costs ~$2,600.

My question is, did I do any long-term damage to my engine?

Doesn't sound like you did any long-term damage since oil was still flowing after you shut her off. The burning smell is inevitable. I think you got lucky, but who knows until they drop the pan.

I doubt you did any damage to the engine. Sorry to hear about the damage. Hope you get everything fixed soon. Gotta be careful on these streets

Thanks for the replies. I just got off the phone with the insurance adjuster and he agreed to classify the accident as no fault and cover it under my comprehensive insurance. Since it's a $500 deductible anyway, I might was well get a new oil pan. Unfortunately, it may be a couple of weeks before it is repaired but the insurance is giving me a rental. Its a BMW 323. No M but it'll do.

Wow, $2600 for a cracked oil pan and oil? Does it really cost that much?

Everything costs more in Canada. That was an over the phone quote to replace the oil pan. I've yet to get an actual estimate.

On Bow trail and 85th St. SW. It was right as you turn on to 85th from Bow. The rock was off of the road when I went by later.

Sounds like you did everything by the book. I really doubt that you will have any long-term problems. Are you handy with tools? Once you have the lower engine plate off (the big aluminum one), which is pretty easy to do (I've done it) access to the oil pan it pretty simple. Maybe you could save a few $$ for something else for your car.

Cost for the pan from Penske is $1018, not cheap here either

M3NOLA I would make a call to the City of Calgary's roads department if it was in a construction zone. The contractor who is building the road is responsible to keep debris off the road. I blew out a tire and damaged suspension/rims because of a huge pothole on Memorial and the City covered the replacement parts and labour.
Hope this helps (and come to the meet on Sept 24th)

I drive on that road every day, we must live pretty close to each other.

It's got Castrol

Don't ya remember that commercial a while back...where they drained the oil on a Castrol engine and another brand...the other brand siezed, but Castrol kept going?

I bet you're fine. Doesn't sound like you went far afterward.

I'll try to make it if I'm free. I wouldn't mind hearing your Akra Evo's in person.

And you're right, lots of construction down the street but none directly on the corner. It could easily have been a rock from a truck headed to the construction site.

I had a similar problem earlier this year - but the rock in question also destroyed my transmission.

The engine was fine, and the car drives fine (after $16k for the new DCT and oil pan, etc)
