if you're doing it when not appropriate then yea i think that would be unwanted strain on the transmission. Shift at the appropriate times and itll be fine. downshifting is a natural process for a transmission such as ours

Did it all the time w/ '08 6MT & do it all the time w/ '11 DCT. Sure, there's a bit extra wear, but nothing that'll show 'til probably 100k miles or so?

i honestly don't know but since i have had my car i have down shifted alot of times and car is running strong. I think what may cause the trans to mess up could be the launch control.

Actually if done properly it is actually beneficial. Tranny gears normally wear on just one side under load, when down shifting, from my understanding it keeps an even wear on gears. Also the higher revs help in keeping the combustion chamber clean as during the engine deceleration the car is lean. Keep in mind if you don't rev match properly you put undo strain on the synchros as well as the clutch. Since you have a DCT the computer will make sure that the downshift will be performed correctly.

Always one person that has to say this.....
I've never had, or met anyone who had to have their transmission changed due to downshifting or engine breaking a manual car. If you drive a manual car and exclusively use the brakes, you are not driving the car properly and will be replacing brakes and rotors regardless if you track.

Downshifting is for setting up for corners. If i'm stopping at a red light I just pursh the clutch in an use the brakes. Brakes are a lot cheaper to replace than the clutch is.

It's not bad to downshift your automatic, sorry, DTC transmission. It's also not bad for the transmission if you upshift. And it's not bad for the engine if you turn it on and drive the car. It's a car, if properly maintained it will do what it's designed to do for a long time. |
