Winter vs. Allseason Tires in the DC Area
Hey guys I picked up my 2011 coupe in June and I'm loving it so far. I just wanted to know if any of you in the DC area use allseason tires or if you use winter tires. I was thinking of getting the Blizzak winters or Continental DWS all season 255 front 275 rear for my ZCP wheels.
I ask because I really won't drive the car in the snow as I can work from home or use my fiance's SUV which we will be buying next month (Honda Pilot, X5, or MDX...her choice) She works from home everyday so I could use the SUV whenever needed. Are winter tires a must in DC or could I get away with allseasons? Please weigh in on difference in the ride, handling, etc. of the two if you have experience with them. Thanks for your help in advance!

I bought Vredestein Wintertrac Extremes, they're ultra high performance tires (so good for 160mph), stable, and competent...plus they handled the blizzards really well

Yeah I was looking around and the Continental DWS was the only all season I could find. It seems most are using winter tires so I'll go ahead and order those in the next few months. I can't imagine keeping this car in the garage I want to drive it everyday...

I have the following all season tires that I use year around. Michelin PS2 A/S Plus: 255/35/19, 285/30/19. They also have several sizes in 275. I like them, but I don't use them in snow. I have them mainly for the cold temperatures in the winter. They are considered "Ultra High Performance All-Season."

Thanks for the replies unless we have numerous blizzards like last year I should be fine either way I'm just worried I will miss the ride and grip of the PS2s. I did make it through last winter with my RWD G35 though
I guess "ultra-high performance" all season or winters should still ride smooth.

A winter like last year is my only concern about buying a RWD car again. As of right now I'm planning on getting an M3 sedan when 09 CPO's hit around $45k. I'd have to do winter tires and perhaps have some Thule chains as a backup.
Either that or I need to wait until my car is paid off and have two cars. I had no issues last year and I'm on all-season PZeros. |

If money is not a problem, throw some winter tires on and buy new wheels with summer tires next spring!
In general, I would keep my car off the road unless I had no choice but to drive it. Besides being more dangerous to drive, all the sand and salt on the roads, plus the terrible winter drivers in our area, are added risks. I had an '04 G35 several years ago, and it was terrible in the snow with the stock tires. I got a set of the Dunlops and it was very reliable in small accumulations of snow. OP, where do you live in MOCO? I'm in Bethesda, and I'm always looking for more e92's but everyone on these forums who likes to do anything seems to be from NOVA.

I live up in Germantown in the new townhome/condos off of Father Hurley. I'm always in Bethesda for work and weekends. I've only seen 2 other E9X M3's in Montgomery County this is crazy I thought there would be so many in DC and MOCO! Thanks everyone for the help I think a dedicated winter and spring/summer setup may be the best bet. I'll be sure to if I see any of you around.

Cool, we should try to coordinate a MOCO meet some time. I'll keep an eye out for your car...I definitely love how the E90/2/3 M3's have not become as commonplace as the E46's.

E90/92/93 M3's are pretty common in NVA. I've seen 3 today during the morning commute.

Fair enough...On any given day, who knows what you'll see? By definition almost, the E90's will have to be out about two more model years to equal the E46's. No disrespect...I still love them!

do most of you guys just go with a winter setup in the rear and keep the summer tires up front?
I know it wouldn't fly last winter with our once a lifetime snowstorm, but what about the previous 3 mild winters we had prior to last year? |

yes, your speedo may be an additional 1 or 2 mph off, but a non-staggered setup is actually better for overall performance, just isn't as aggressive looking
