Another Engine Malfunction! Reduced power

Today it's my turn to get all the error messages, DSC, DBC, Emission etc. The car is October 08 build.

So here is exactly what happened:

Started the engine, noticed the idle speed was only 200-300 rpm, then just a couple seconds, all the error messages come up on i-Drive screen. The idle was then at 1000rpm and warn up redline stays at 5000rpm. It did not go away after multiple restarts. I then slowly drove home, couldn't even out accelerate an Lincoln limo.

After I got home, restarted it a couple more times, now it only has the Increased emission error showing. There is the "tatata..." noise coming from the engine and I feel it wants to stall, it feels very weak although it is idling at 500rpm.

Just a couple questions, are all the error messages stored in the car? So when I take it to the dealer they don't say "we didn't find anything." Second, is this the idle-air actuator that the Service Bulletin 13-05-08 talks about? When I take the car in, shall I just let them find what's wrong or tell them to perform this service bulletin.

Many thanks in advance for advice on this situation, below are 2 photos that I have taken.

Just got my car back from the dealer a couple days ago... I had the same exact thing happen... Its the idle control thing and about 6 other parts... there is a SB associated with it... most dealers know about this...

BTW other people noted that they may put a lot of miles on your car, but my dealer only put 5... so if you get more then 10 i would be concerned...

First, thank you for all the advices.

This morning, I started the car a couple more times and finally the Increased emission warning is gone too. Never the less, I still made with an appointment with the dealer, but it's a week from now.

Meanwhile, I will still drive the car and see if it happens again.

Really sorry to hear that, sounds like the idle sensor problem hit you twice.

FTM = Flat Tire Monitor, the car is Canadian spec.

Today while driving, the problem occurred again, but it went away after restarting just once.

Can you elaborate a bit? why would too high a fuel pressure cause the rpm to drop. Dropping in rpm to near stall is exactly what happens just before all the errors come up.

Exactly why I do not know, I went to my dealership who has not found any abnormality, and deleted the default.
The failure came after driving quietly for 15 minutes.
As against the previous day I rode against a ZX10R, I drove about 330 km/h, this could explain that.
Sorry for my english.

Uh oh, deja vu. This is really starting to sound like the S54 engines going kaboom back in '02. Except that this is not that bad, thankfully. Is anyone keeping a tally of how many (and who and when) have had this problem? And for those that have, has there been a successful resolution, what is it, and how long has it been problem free once fixed?

I think we might need to start keeping track of this. Anyone else agree?

The dealer should be able to pull up all the malfunction data so you don't have to worry about remember all those darn malfunctions.

They even know when you start your and the low fuel indicator comes on!

08 M3 convertible. Same Issue--"Engine Malfunction: Reduced Power" Started about a month ago and progressively became more frequent--soon was accompanied by "DSC Failure" and "Check Engine". Dealer stumped--nothing "wrong" with car. They still have it at the dealership. 3300 mile on it. I'll post the repair if they figure it out.

How disappointing.

I had the same issue on my 08 E92 and took it to the dealer. They found a SIB regarding an engine hose that has been failing and needed to be replaced. It took about a week to get the part from Germany. They replaced it and I haven't had the issue recur in the past 3000 miles. Before that, it was happening about 1 / week for 3 weeks and would clear itself after a few starts. My symptoms were exactly as you described.

Take it in and have your dealer look for the SIB. If they can't find it, let me know and I'll get the SIB info from my dealer and post it up for you.

Good Luck.

My E93 has close to 9000 miles on it and I brought it in for the same problem. Can't say I'm surprised after searching these posts that it's the idle governor thing. I'm just concerned that this may become a recurring issue. Anyone ever have the thing replaced more than once?

In my experience, it is not the idle control valve. The computer states that it is, but it was the fuel rails. So have them check that as well. Mine was in the shop 3 times and the idle control valve replaced each time before they realized what the problem actually was. But since they replaced the fuel rails, it has been working great.

Woah there boy!

The S54 engines failures were exactly that. This is a much smaller issue, yes an issue, but its not engines blowing up.

I suspect there is a common faulty part where a manufacturer that BMW is using has dropped the ball that is causing this, much like the Electronc Fan Failure on the 3 series and X5 in 2001.

Regards,
Neil.

seems to do the trick

Car now runs great--actually stronger than before. Dealer followed forwarded SBI (Thanks Wolf-e92). Fuel sensor, or "idle actuator" and "idle strips"
