This wasn't a matter of jack-rabbiting out on a green light. He was driving down a busy street, when the mustang totally did not pay attention to his red light. Damage this extensive couldn't have happened at low speed. |

If the repair costs are more than 70% of the car's value then it will be considered a total loss.
The bigger question is who will be assigned blame for the accident (be it your friend or the other driver) and do they have enough insurance coverage to cover the cost of a new car. Many people only carry a $25K collision policy in Ca. The only way to make up the difference is if your friend has uninsured/under insured coverage (GAP) or if they can successfully sue and recoup costs from the other party. Good luck and hope everyone is OK. |

It's a total loss....I'm pretty sure both frame rails are crushed in and that's expensive enough to replace, let alone the airbags being deployed. I got in an accident with mine and it didn't even look half as bad as that and my outcome was $21,000 in repairs. Tell your friend to start new car shopping.

Glad everyone is OK.
Not sure if that will be totaled or not, but 2008 E90 M3 was. Luckily I was OK too. I had gap insurance too so I was not out of pocket anything. I feel very safe in my BMW even more now. See pics below.

From the amount of damage to the front end, your buddy was going really, really fast when he hit the 'stang. Probably way over the posted speed limit.
I would advise him to get a good lawyer and start reading up on contributory negligence and Cali motor vehicle law. I am sure the other insurance company's lawyer will try to pin at least part of the blame on your friend (and my gut tells me, they're right). Glad no one was hurt. If it was a little girl on a bicycle that "ran" the red light, it would have been a completely different outcome. Hope your buddy has a friendly insurance agent and deep pockets.

Still can't figure out the pyhsics of this accident. All the debris is at least 1 1/2 tow truck lengths back from the stop line - i.e. BEFORE the intersection. That's what, 40 feet?
Is the story that a 'stang ran the light, the M3 hit him at a high rate of speed, and the M3 then bounced BACKWARD 40 feet? And all the debris bounced backward 40 feet, too? Doesn't add up. The damage is consistent with the M3 rear-ending someone at a high rate of speed. My theory: M3 was racing to make the yellow light, guy ahead of him stopped. Either that or M3 driver was texting and didn't see stopped traffic. Would love to see the Police Report on this one.

If you're correct (and looking at the photo again, you may be), the traffic signals sure look like they are a long way away from the stop line in the M3's direction of travel. Maybe that's an artifact of the camera lens, or maybe that's the way they do things in Cali.
I still say the M3 was travelling at a high rate of speed to have sustained such significant front end damage. It's obvious he hit the Mustang, not the other way around.
