if it's normal driving condition, i think the car can handle it. but imho it depends a lot on the road.
i drove from los angeles to san francisco a few times, and there are stretches where you will go 30-40 mins of on and off uphill/downhill. with just me and my wife with not so much luggage (i have 6mt) and maintaining around 80mph (a lot of times have to be in 5th or even 4th), the temp gauge went halfway between 1/2 and 3/4. that's higher than what i felt comfortable. same thing when i drove back and forth from los angeles to las vegas, there are some long stretch of climbs. with a/c blasting summer time and doing 80+, temp gauge climbed turning the a/c off immediate cooled it down quite a bit in both cases

I would seriously doubt that a 1,000 mile drive would faze the car in the least. CA

Man, I just don't know. I drove a 1974 Gran Torino from Montreal to Calgary (2200 miles) in 31 hours. WTF if a NA beater can do a 2200 mile trip you might as well trade in your M3 on a Lada.
My M3 has done numerous 300-400 mile trips no major hiccups except the tire sensor crap that I have seen here before. |

I did 12000miles in 57 days this summer. Because of the fuel mileage you have to stop every 340-350miles to re-fuel. I think the fuel tank size is a built in safety device that prevents the car from melting.

It's just a regular car. You could probably drive that thing nearly forever until it needed an oil change/fluid maintenance.

This question belongs here...
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...idest+question I'm amazed that some of you are answering this as if it were a legitimate question. Are there any modern cars you can buy that you can't expect to drive 1000 miles? Let alone a $60k GT. If someone knows so little about cars in general and this car in particular, they shouldn't be spending this kind of money for this kind of car. |

I was bored at work and I'm about to take a long trip this Saturday that's why I posted the thread. Longest trip I've done with this car was 400 miles though so I think my car will melt on this 1000 miles trip.

There have been a couple of issues with my M3 so far. It seems overheating is not one of them. I understand your worries, we all spent a lot of money on this car. It's only right that we take precautions to keep it from harm. But I think you'll be just fine so enjoy your trip!

Drove car home 780 miles, in 114ºF heat, A/C at full blast. Stopped every 200 miles for gas (to play it safe, and to stretch a little), and close to 4K rpm a lot of the time. Temp went a little over half, that was it. And later realized it gets to that point even in winter (fluctuates from middle to slightly past middle). As it was said, you can drive 200 or 2,000 miles (or until next oil change interval, when tires wear out, etc) without worry. If something is going to happen to your car/engine at 'x' mileage, it'd happen during a 2K-mile trip of a 10-mile trip to the grocery store. Just in case it was a serious question... which I suspect it was . Take care.

When I was four, my family and I spent a year driving around the US (hit 45 states) in a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme while towing a U Haul trailer. During the trip, crossed extreme terrain such as death valley without a hitch.
I think you'll be fine. The engine will outlast your gas tank + bladder. 1,000 miles is nothing.
