The last "real ///M?"
Which one of the following vehicles, if any, best deserves the title of "last real ///M Car?"
E30 M3 E46 M3 E9X M3 E39 M5 E60 M5 E63 M6 E82 1M We've heard that phrase thrown around here quite a bit, but do we all agree that E9X is that car? What does that even mean to you?

From a purist standpoint, the E30. I still think mine is a real M... For what I paid for it, it had better be!

I refuse to vote because it would be an affront to what I just bought. I feel the 2005 E46 M3 ZCP was the high-water mark. As the next poster states they're ALL VERY SPECIAL. I agree

I don't really know how what the criteria for a pure M car are so I'll just say the original E30 M3 and the E9x M3. I think they're all very special though (except the M6's... Those are tourers)

I feel ya. I selected E46 M3, and had my 2006 ZCP in mind when I picked that. I love my E92, but I think that car was more ///M than this one, regardless of its amazing capabilities. I saw your other post in Mike's thread about these cars being strong. I haven't driven an '11 yet, but mine feels pretty solid under hard driving (minor interior rattles aside). I hope to get a new E9X before it's all said and done and with ZCP to see if it's the car I'm hoping it to be.

each and every one of them is and was for the time it was made. Mankind as we all know is moving forward as we speak. Each had the ///M badge and that speaks for itself. my 2 cents.
PS I drove a e46 (2002) for 7 years and loved it as much as my e92

for now, i'd say that the e9x stays closer to the tradition of the m3 series than the planned turbo 6... a high revving na powerplant is what it's been all about.
that being said, progress is progress, and i won't dismiss the next generation until it's been tried, tested, and tortured. driving pleasure and performance is what makes an m3 ultimately, so i'll reserve judgement...

The E30 M3 will always be the first and only real M3 just because of the purpose of its existence: to race first, and to sell to the public in sufficient quantities to qualify for that racing second.
Any other M3 is just the business result of that homologation effort. |

I voted E46 just because the E92 feels so much more refined and luxury focused compared to the comparatively much more raw E46.
This is all relative though. If the F3X M3 is a heavy dull boat that relies entirely on turbo boost and electronic trickery feel fast or sporty, the E92 will probably feel like the E46 in comparison to it. The only reason I don't choose the E30 is because it is kind of on a level above standard M, more along of the same lines as the E46 CSL. |

The e9x M is as close as "true M" gets in my opinion.

The E30 M3 was a race car homologated for the street. All of the others (and I've owned all the M3 variants and have an E90 M3 on order right now) are street cars.

Although I would be hapy to have any M car in the drive way, my list of favourites includes: e92 Pure Edition (Australian special edition) e46 CSL e30 (never offically released here)
