Front BBK

Does anyone run a front BBK only with stock rear brakes? I'm wondering if it's necessary to pay for a full kit.

Thanks

I run a Brembo 365 GT front kit with stock rear brakes.

Front only here, no issues whatsoever. You'd be surprised how little the rear brakes work on the track.

When you guys run a front BBK only, do you use the same pads all around? How long do the rear pads last compared to the front after track use? Can't see myself dropping $7k+ for BBKs in the front & rear, but starting with the front only sounds appealing...

Im curious about this as well. I would want to go 380mm for more thermal capacity and I'd think its better on track than the 365. But will that skew the brake balance too much to the front?

Now here is a name that I haven't seen in a long time.

This is smurfm3 from Roadfly. Last I remember you had a TiAg E46 M3 with 100K+, sold it for some American car (was it a GTO?) and now I see you're back in an M5...

It's really a matter of your preference and your car set up. For example, the type and size of your tires can affect the amount of grip available at an axle and therefore change the "optimal" brake balance.

In most cases, running the BBK's default pad in the front and stock rear pad would be fine, assuming the coefficient of friction of the front pad isn't significantly different than stock. I know both StopTech and Brembo front kits work fine with stock rear pads.

The weights of the Brembo 380 and 365 rotors are actually very similar. Remember, the brake disc is not a solid piece of metal.

How much bias you have on a particular axle is based on, among many things, the size of the rotor and the size of the pistons. Think of it as turning a wrench. To create the same amount of torque, you can have a shorter wrench with a stronger arm; or a longer wrench with a weaker arm.

The same principle applies to brakes. The 365 kit has larger pistons than the 380 kit to offset the rotor diameter difference.

Would it be wrong to assume that this car can adjust the bias essentially "as it sees fit"?

OP, you might want to look into the new Racing Brake front only BBK option.

I've been running Brembo 380mm BBK at the fronts for almost a year, HPS pads at the front, OEM pads at the rear. No issues, significant braking improvement and confidence over the front OEM calipers. And the new look is just the money shot...

And now I'm waiting for the delivery of the rear 380mm BBK (HPS pads) to finish the job.

Any need to change out the rear lines for braided lines when installing only a front BBK?

Not a necessity but I would definitely do it.

Modern cars nowadays have electronic brake force distribution along with ABS, traction control, stability control, etc. Each car has a default bias curve and it is adjusted on-the-fly using a series of valves. However, there is a limit to which the curve can vary. For example, if the default is 60/40, it can probably go to 70/30 as it sees fit... but not something extreme like 90/10.

It's always a good idea as water is permeable through the rubber hoses and can significantly reduce the dry boiling temperature of the brake fluid over time.
