Went to the Bimmerfest/Speed Ventures/Bimmer Challenge day today at Auto Club Speedway. (I'll post more about the day on my build thread later.) The Bimmer Challenge guys did a really nice job--Tony Jackson, Joe Yang, Elie Mansour (and the other sponsors I don't know...) Thanks!
I was able to set a personal best in the 90º heat and win B1 class today. 2009 E90 M3 Track/course: Auto Club Speedway Best Lap Time: 1:45.696 Brakes: AP Racing - Cobalt Friction XR2 front/XR3 rear Tires: Yokohama slicks Suspension: JRZ RS Pro Other mods: VF620, RD Sport front sway bar, car is gutted with full roll cage, APR 67" GT-250 wing, carbon lip, APR front splitter, AJ Hartmann Canards, Akrapovic X-Pipe, exhaust: straight through with resonators, do88 DCT cooler, Recaro Pro Racer halo seat, DSC-off At the end of this lap, I had a good start to another lap going, and then a purple Charger decided to meander across the blend line while exiting the pits and get in front of me on the oval. Big no-no. You can admire his wonderful driving at the end of the video. |

Do you find Yokohama slicks faster than BFG R1S?

Yokos are faster than R1S. Pretty much any new fresh Slick is faster than R1S---but some of them are not much faster....the R1S really is a great tire. I have a new set of R1S waiting to be mounted! |

Although I just visited Auto Club Speedway last week with Bimmerfest, I really wanted to take one more shot at ACS while the track is still in my head. So, I went today, and I'm glad I did!
I was able to set another PR. Dropped another 8/10th sec. 2009 E90 M3 Track/course: Auto Club Speedway Best Lap Time: 1:44.890 (transponder) Brakes: AP Racing - Cobalt Friction XR2 front/XR3 rear Tires: Yokohama slicks Suspension: JRZ RS Pro Other mods: VF620, RD Sport front sway bar, car is gutted with full roll cage, APR 67" GT-250 wing, carbon lip, APR front splitter, AJ Hartmann Canards, Akrapovic X-Pipe, exhaust: straight through with resonators, do88 DCT cooler, Recaro Pro Racer halo seat, DSC-off (I discovered an odd and troubling tech issue last night while prepping the car---I seem to have completely lost my air filter and supercharger inlet pipe last week at Bimmerfest.....I am quite sure I ran on track without an air filter....yikes. But thanks to the help of okusa lending me a couple parts, I was able to cobble together a fix so I could get back to ACS today....hmmm maybe I need to give those parts back to him..... ) Video: It was quite crowded at ACS today. Over 40 people in our run group. I literally had one clean, open lap. This was it. |

Every track is challenging in it’s own way when trying to go fast. I don't visit ACS much, so I haven't built up any "track memory". Here are some thoughts on that track: -The Oval is a game of nerves. The car is capable of very high speeds there. The question is does the driver have the nerve to go to the limit? I don't. Use smooth inputs. Start Turn 1 higher up and work your way down the track during the turn smoothly and gradually. Smooth driver input is key. -Turn 3 is very challenging because you have to bleed 100mph of speed. In my fast lap video, you can see I go from 143mph down to 43mph. Getting that braking zone correct is challenging, especially if you don't visit often. I blew that corner several times over the last two weekends. Your sense of speed is altered from the Oval, so getting down that slow just feels wrong, but it’s a full 90º turn with a tall hard barrier on the inside. You can’t cut the corner. If you don’t brake enough, or brake too late, you’ll blow right past it. -Turn 4 now has a Rim Eating monster at the worst possible place---at the end of the berm at the track-out point.....could not be in a worse place. You overshoot and get on the berm, kiss that tire goodbye. Many rims were eaten in the last two weekends. Anyway, Turn 3 and 4 are about patience. -Turn 5,6 has about 4000 ways you can take that turn.....which one is best? Who knows. -Turn 7,8 Chicane is another game of nerves. A car with aero can hold quite well through there, but you need to trust it. -Turn 9 is visually tough because you need to pretty much drive past the turn before turning in. There's not a lot of turns like that. -Turn 13 - the right hand after the back straight is again another high-speed-to-low-speed turn. People (including me) overcook that turn ALL THE TIME. -Playground - the last part of the course is just bumpy, bouncy, pot-holy, nasty and ridiculous. My advice is just graze the cones as close as you can and get the heck out of there. Many people love this portion of the track.......I have no idea why.... |

Track/course: Nelson Ledges Best Lap Time: 1:19 Brakes: Powerstop Track Day pads - else stock Tires: RE71R 2 years old Suspension: Stock Other mods: Super stage 17.1 MS intake New pavement was pretty smooth, horrid drop offs with no curbing in place yet and I've never been there so no idea on turn in points, braking etc. kept the pace fun but conservative. 90 Degrees and sunny out, was told it slowed down in the afternoon with the new asphalt releasing something I don't remember. |

A recent track day I attended and was able to run both Michelin Cup2 & Hoosier R7 tires. R7's were on their first heat cycle (I was just breaking them in so did 2 hot laps only).
Track conditions were not great, very dusty, humidity at 75% and temperature @36C (96F). Running R7's for the first time and had my front camber at -2.5 ONLY and tire pressure set to 35 PSI cold so they got really hot by the second lap and was sliding around. Huge difference running them over Cup2 tires with almost 5 seconds drop in lap time. Enjoy! |

Nice car and setup! It looks like you're over cooking all the corners and appplying too much power too quickly and making the rest brake loose. Fun if that's your intent! How does the car normally handle? Have you tried slowing a hair more and getting on the gas sooner? |

I was pushing the car a bit too hard but that's because I wanted to see how the Hoosiers will handle compared to cup2 in terms of grip. Also, I wanted to put my cooling setup to test and see if the car will overheat (it didn't thanks to the do88 setup). Go to my YouTube channel and see my laps in Time Attack events, I'm usually smoother when competing. Thanks, AJ |

It's really different for every tire. Using a tire pressure gauge and a pyrometer with the car aligned correctly for the tire mounted I found the best tire pressures to be: Cup2: 37 Trofeo R: 32 NT01: 34 Ventus TD: 30 Hoosiers: 39 This is based on my personal experience and my setup. Cheers, AJ |
