Can you flesh this out a bit?

I'm not putting you down, but in general, the RS5 seems to be very slightly slower than the M3 in a straight line, and very slightly quicker around a race track. In addition, it's been characterized as being a bit more responsive around town, with a slightly more usable torque curve. Obviously, this doesn't translate into "mediocre" performance, unless you also think the m3 is also a mediocre performer, which I doubt.

It must be something else.

Can you describe it?

I think some of these comments are made in fear of the Audi replacing the m and becoming the preferred daily driver. E92 m3 started production in 08 an has not received massive change since. Until the new m3 releases for sale anyways. Te Audi rs5 is advanced in both visual and performance aspects an owning one of the latest sports cars from either Audi BMW or Porsche Is gratification in itself. Until te new wave of m3s hit the street go head and purchase this beauty. Be one of the few. When 2014 m3 is available make a fair comparison then and you will be faced with the same scenario again. This time in m3s favour. For those who do not track their m3 anyways. As I am one of them. It is fair to say that many of us do not demand m3 full potential as a daily driver so loosing alitle here and there in performance will go unnoticed, but te pleasure of driving a new rs5 calls for attention from both luxury and sport car enthusiasts.

The RS5 has a fantastic presence - inside and out, and the interior of the current M3 looks like it was designed in the early 90's compared to Audis. The sound is equally fantastic. Stock for stock - another win for the RS5.

Off we go to drive around... around town it obviously has more "usable" torque than the M3, I put usable in quotes since I never felt the M3 was lacking. Being from Germany I drove around town with tiny displacement engines and 45hp.... so torque is all relative. I should also note that currently I'm quite used to the power and gearing of my current SC'ed M3, so that obviously skewed my perception a bit on the other end of the spectrum.

Here are the things I found mediocre- again, I use this term based on the insane price tag (especially in Germany).

Steering felt numb, especially during a spirited drive on back roads, very disappointing, but nothing new.

Gearbox, again very hesitant at times, and I even prefer the old gearbox from the C63 a lot more.

Power, it sure moves... it was fantastic on the Autobahn, didn't quite have the bite on the back-roads.

Chassis, great on the Autobahn, felt very planted, again, on the back roads the car felt bouncy at times. On the flip side it felt very heavy at times.

Quatro, I always loved it... my dad had the (Ur)-Quatro Sport back in the day, and it offers you tons of grip. But it comes at a cost, hence the weird steering feel.

Again, I'm biased since I have much more power than the stock M3, but overall the RS5 left me rather cold. Not a car I would ever lust after.

Having said that, I don't think you'd find any RS5 owner unhappy with her or his purchase. And many Audi costumers buy these cars BECAUSE it's not a BMW.
I just noticed the extend of your m3 upgrades. Wow. I don't think many stock cars would leave you breathless.

I have yet to drive one... Not a single one around to test drive or even sit in I do like the way it looks especially since i liked my S5... It's just that M3 is better in many other ways.

Turn the M3 into a dedicated weekend/track rig and DD the RS5. That's enthusiast perfection IMO, living where there's rain and/or snow most days of the year. I have read that the RS5 suspension is not comfortable enough though and that would have me worried.

RS5 is nice and at least Audi stuck with a N/A V8 power plant, we know they could have went with a supercharged V6 or a Turbo inline 5 for that matter. I am a dyed in wool "propeller head" but I would give the RS5 a shot for comparisons sake. That being said I still prefer the overall package of the E92 ///M3

RS5 looks like a beast for sure, but if I was going to buy an Audi right now, I'd be tempted to get the supercharged 3.0 in the S4 or S5 and get a Stasis tune.

OK, you said it. You're creazy! Just me but I'd shoot for something that offered more performance if I were to keep the M3. Variety is nice but in the long run what would the RS5 provide that you don't get out of the M3? Damn, I sound like my dad, sorry about that.

The main reason I thought of the RS5 is that I like my M3 and I want something similar but in a different way. I test drove M6 & 911s and both didn't make me feel I want one. I'm going to be honest the M3 spoiled my taste and now I really can't find something that is better for me. Speaking about being crazy I thought of getting another M3 cp

Yeah, I'm sure we'd all be like Jay Leno if we could. I'd sure appreciate all wheel drive for dicey weather days here.

Was thinking the same thing. I'm just not a big fan of that huge honeycomb grill. The front of the M3 is simply beautiful and mean looking all at the same time. There is not much about the Audi that I like better other than the interior.... which is beautiful.
