If you quote anything from a vendor who is trying to sell you something, and then take that advice as the 100% truth, you deserve to lose your money. Until there is sufficient testing done by an independent reviewer and or garage that show an average mileage the lsd begins to fail, you can't put value in any mileage. All speculation up to this point.

Please show me, in writing, where BMW makes this claim. And no, one SA (read: service center salesperson) telling you that is not evidence. I am tired of anecdotal bullshit being peddled on here as fact in an attempt to scare people into ridiculous unnecessary maintenance and laughable babying of their cars.

But then again, if you guys love sinking money into stuff that is literally not even broken, nor close to it, go for it -- your car and your money. Just stop scaring others with unverifiable claims.
This. All of this.

Amen. Out of my decade+ with owning and modifying BMWs, never have I seen so much paranoia and fear mongering as on this board. It's like a huge AA meeting, except everyone brings booze.

So far we have instilled fear in rod bearings, throttle actuators, fading carbon roof, LSD, and not enough factory cooling capacity, what shall we cover next? LOL

7 month dead thread bump???

The LSD unit has a service life. I wouldn't rebuild the LSD unit until it gets to a point where its no longer providing any lock. Its not like a non-functioning LSD unit is going to explode and cause lots of damage.

If you track your car and put a lot of heat into the diff, then your service life will be a lot shorter than a street driven unit.

have you looked at the STI forums? It's worse than here with people paranoid about ringlands and spun rod bearings.

A few years ago, the diff oil was separate to the noise reduction fluid.
Some 'ignorant' individuals complained that the LSD was not silent in use and hence BMW decided that noise reduction fluid must be the default option and hence the standard fluid now contains it too.

Perhaps it is that or maybe a different change. I just buy the diff oil from Castrol.

I have to say that dparms posts about scaremongering, evidence and vendors are spot on.
