Cannot replace runflat tires unless I have a spare?

I recently ordered four michellin pilot sport 2's for my 2012 128i, and when I went to have them installed at costco, they said that they could not mount them unless I had a spare tire, which is absolutely crazy. Now they're telling me I need to buy an extra rim and tire before they will mount them? Is this common when replacing run flat tires? Thanks for the help.

Wow, that's nuts. Take your business elsewhere. Never heard of that and talk about protecting their own butt. I'd go to an America's Tire or Discount Tire, they'll have no problem, do good work, and will price match as well and not give you a hard time.

Here in Texas the NTB boys don't seem to care what they mount on your rims or what your factory tire requirements where. They never questioned anything.

There are lots of Costco stories on this site and the consistent theme is they have idiots working at Costco and you really shouldn't let them touch your car. Find a real tire place.

Yep, go elsewhere. Just make sure you have a kit to fix a flat or prepare for a tow for any flat tire.

Sears did mine without any problems. They just asked that I was aware of what I was doing. It's rubbish they tried to force into an unnecessary purchase.

I used to have my eye exam office in Costco. They have low profit margins on everything there so they really don't like to mess with anything not standard. It used to be a pain just to get them to not put on green valve stem covers because they filled the tires with nitrogen. If the wheels aren't stock or the tire specs aren't stock they really don't want to do it. Still a great place to get tires for your non-modded vehicles.

I think they're worried about liability, so they're told to stick with the recommended tire configurations/sizes specified in their database.

I would not trust the guys at Costco to check my washer fluid, let alone work on my car.

With that said, what would they do if a smart came in? No RFT's, and no spare. Comes from the factory like that....
