(Not) Great results from 1200 mi service!
Here's a picture of my shiny new 2013 E92 M3 just before going in for it's 1200 mile break in service:
Here's a picture of my garage floor after the car sat overnight following it's 1200 mile break in service: Here's a picture of the oil cap on my shiny new 2013 E92 M3 after I removed it to investigate why there was oil all over the floor. Pay close attention to the rubber gasket on the right side: What the hell? I have now learned that not only is the M3 oil cap horribly designed, but I once again learned that it takes absolutely no brains or skill whatsoever to be a BMW service technician. I know the cap is badly designed but you have to TRY to mangle it up so bad. Needless to say, I wish I read this thread (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=642222&page=2) before taking the car in for service, otherwise I wouldn't have spent the last hour cleaning oil off the engine and scrubbing my new garage floor, only to have the stains still be there. Obviously I'll be making a call to the service department tomorrow and ask for some compensation. Any recommendations? I don't want to take the car back there for a cleanup since I've already done that and I don't want to put another 100 miles on my car. What would be fair to ask for?

I am glad I had my 1200 mile service at the PDC.
No issues so far. I can't believe the carelessness of some dealership techs. Hope they make it right OP

I take it your wise ass response is another way of saying don't ask for anything? Thanks.
Maybe I'll just come over and pour oil on your driveway and in your engine compartment. Let me know how you feel afterwards.

Jim,
Look at that guys forum name .. it says it all... Sorry about your troubles... I have been following this forum for about 1.5 months, while I wait for my car to arrive. I read when you got yours, and I would feel the same way as you... I would want to be compensated for my time. DominionXX |

I hate it for the OP. One of the reasons everytime I take it in for service, before I leave I always open the hood and check everything. I know that it is a pain in the butt to do, but it is better than driving with an oil cap that wasn't closed correctly. I would let the Service Manager know what happened. Good luck with everything.
Eric

I would demand that they reimburse you for the purchase price of the car. If they say 'NO' I would hire a lawyer and sue their ass. Then I'd call the BBB and file a complaint. Next, I would purchase a domain name like <insert-dealership-name>sucks.com and tell the whole world how they turned your life upside down. Then I would purchase a full page add in your local newspaper to warn other consumers, maybe a radio and TV add as well. And last but not least I would chain myself to the front door until they reimburse me.
I'm just kidding... I'm sure you're not going to take it to that extreme but recently there have been some forum members who have been asking for outrageous compensation for silly little things. Just approach it calmly and straight headed and I'm sure they'll treat you right. If you attack them then you may not get the outcome you were looking for. I don't know if they'll actually compensate you in the form of cash but perhaps a gift card towards some BMW swag is in order. GL. |

You'll probably get an apology and maybe some small token discount or gift to compensate you. Don't push too hard or all you'll get is..."there's no way you can prove this is our fault". Here's the takeaway on this - always check their work BEFORE leaving the dealership. |

Can't stand dealers.
Drives me crazy. My intake boot never popped off in 44K miles until they took it all apart and put it back together to replace the idle control valve. They have no worth ethic. Sorry that happened to you and good luck getting it resolved.

Thanks for the sympathetic responses. Dealer has been pretty apologetic (Leith BMW in Raleigh, NC). They're overnighting me a new oil cap, offered to no-kidding drive the mechanic out to my house to inspect for leaks, replace the cap, clean the car and clean my garage. Instead I'm driving up to them so they can clean it up and fix it, then they'll give me some of their industrial floor cleaner to take home. I'd rather do it at the dealership vice my garage!

I actually lost very little oil, yours is likely the same. It just sucked to have the oil film all over everything, as well as the drips on my floor. I wouldn't worry enough to flatbed it - you can still accurately check the oil level on iDrive or the dash. To be honest, my biggest complaint was the complete incompetence of he tech in replacing the cap. You can see from the pix how obvious the problem is. Now if only BMW would design a cap that's as effective as the cap on my 69 cent bottle of diet coke!

Completely agree on the fact you have to be conscious to mangle the gasket. I have the new and old cap, both fit snug enough without having to push down on it. also if you lube it with oil it slides and keeps the gasket in place. If these techs (some) would just pay attention to the actual mechanics involved in something simple as an oil cap .... guys at my local Indy shop are meticulous in comparison.
