Whining sound below 20mph

I\'ve been having a gradual increase in a whining sound (almost sounds like when one turns the steering wheel the full amount).

Can be described as a droning sound.

Summary:
Under 20mph
Under 3k rpm
Any gear
Independent of turning wheel or not
Independent of acceleration rate
Getting progressively louder

2011 E90
DCT
4k miles
Proper break in
No mods

Taking my car in but checking if this has been an issue.

That whining sound is generated by members of M3post.com, you can't hear it above 20mph due to road noise.

Tell the bitch to shut up!

Wasn't there any issue with the DCT cars?
Something about the dealers changing the limited skip fluid with the wrong kind at the 1200mile service?

She was already in to change to the special fluid for the LSD. Helped that problem about 90%

This is a different sound - coming from front of car.

Goes in thurs. I'll update when/if they diagnose.

I have it too. Seems like it could be the A/C compressor possibly or a pulley. Something like that.

To be clear my issue is not the whining sound as described by audis5 in the below post

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=594120

...which by the way I'm glad is now resolved.

Here is a vid. iPhone so sound quality is not great. The whine/drone is between 1k and 2k RPM.

Again, it's much louder in person but perhaps someone can diagnose it from this clip.

Also, the sound does get worse, this is about 50% of the max volume I've experienced.

sounds like on the the accessory pullies, or one of the belts. Check the belts and play in the pullies. GL

I would say definitely engine driven and not tranny.

Anyone know if you can knock a DCT into "N" while coasting?

Thanks all.

Ironically it was the power steering fluid. Weird to me because:

sound happened only when between 1k - 2k RPM w/ or w/o wheel turned

So anything over 2k RPM and turning the sound would not appear, which I thought ruled out the power steering.

All better now.

So, power steering fluid? I have the same noise that's been happening more frequently now. I will take it to the dealers this week.

Correct. You may even save yourself a trip by just topping it off yourself.

I had this issue because the power steering fluid was low. Easily fixed but where the hell is the power steering fluid going?

Might be that your software got out off sink ... sounds to me like your fuel pump is stone walling at the lower speed ... just a thought, the dealer should straighten this out for you. Good that you are going to the dealer Do let us know how you make out once the dealer diagnosed the issue.

Best of luck with that.
