That's not true. The new GTR will beat 997.1 and .2 Turbos at most performance measures. The Turbo S is another story though.

Yeah you might be right. 2012 GTR is something else. But in anyway, not that I drove any of these cars, if the price wasn't the factor, I'd say 911 turbo would be a better car to drive.

If you can swing it, I think you should do it. That's the only cure Otherwise you will drive yourself crazy and not appreciate your M.

The car is amazing. Most people who make negative comments about the car have never driven one. I couldn't be happier with the GTR. Mine is super silver.

Basically:

GTR. JUST DO IT!

+1

It will bite at the heels of a turbo S which costs $70,000 more. With a simple tune/exhaust I'm sure it would be a drivers race. There is a Fifth Gear episode where they were compared in a race on the track and the turbo S won by a small margin. I think some of the difference was due to the fact that Tiff Needell was drivng the P car. That guy can drive. If the GTR would have won, Porsche would have had a fit. I had a 997.1tt a couple years ago. I personally think the GTR is more entertaining. It has a lot of character.

I read that I'd have to live in North Dakota to be able to afford to own one. No thanks... I kid. I kid. I did a three year sentence in South Dakota and that was enough for me.

My take is that GTRs are stupid fast, but like any car on the track, they take a talented driver to make them work well. Yes, I'm one of those guys who has "beat" GTRs (yes, plural, there were three of them there and I passed them all at one time or another) on the track in my street tire shod E46 M3 (Spring Mountain Motorsports Park, full track). However, I've been smoked by 'lesser' cars than an E46 M3 so it proves nothing other than driver skill makes a big difference on the track.

If I had the resources and desire I'd think about a GTR, but I prefer a GT3, so that's what I'd likely end up with.

Cars like the GTR are good for all of us. They press the envelop of what can be done and somewhat force the hand of other car makers to match or beat it. Dollar for dollar it is tough to argue with a GTR as a 'good value' supercar.

OP: If you want one and have the resources for it then get it. I hope you have a ton of fun with it too!

If price weren't a factor I would definitely take the 997 too.

I'd take a .2 turbo (S or not) over a .2 GTR anyday .

At this level they're fighting over tenths; price aside of course.

Keep the M3 and buy the GTR as a 2nd or 3rd car.

That way you can drive the car you are in the mood for and what fits your needs to that day.

997 Turbo S in a heartbeat over a GT-R. What's so appealing about the GT-R is the performance you get for the money. I've promised myself I'll own the 991 Turbo S in a couple of years. Not sure if it'll happen but I sure hope it does.

This.

All of these discussions in the vs. thread didn't exist a decade ago. The gap has narrowed amongst all performance cars which leaves us all with multiple choices and difficult decisions.

Is this suddenly a Nissan forum?

The GTR is an ugly plastic serial box car. It's Yamaha vs. Ducati all over again.

If you just want to go factory fast then get whatever makes you happy. Maybe Toyota, Honda and Hyundai will jump on the success of the GTR and produce a few more serial box cars for the GTR customers.

Exactly! I'll have my '12 Black Edition in a couple of weeks and will let you know my impressions, if interested. The look of the car has grown on me and the enhancements for '12 make it that much better IMO. I can't wait to get it broken in and use the launch control for the first time! Good Luck...

Tough call.

I think as several others have pointed out that the ownership experience with BMW is better. Nissan dealerships in general don't know how to handle a customer coming in and dropping that kind of money on a car and service and despite the fact that this probably sounds snobby - that would annoy me after a while.

On top of that not all dealers are authorized to service the car which stinks.

However, performance-wise it's a beast and you can't deny that. I bet it would be an awesome car to own.

On a side note, I'm surprised everyone saying people take pics/videos and you worry about people keying it. It must vary by where you live, but I see a GT-R or two or three a week around here and no one makes a big deal. Maybe a 2nd look, thumbs up, etc. But no one busting out the camera phone or keying it.

not in my opinion .. I love how the GTR looks. Very mean and and aggressive. and the '12 interior is much better too.

Nothing wrong with Yamaha vs. Ducati (or Japanese vs European). Before I got my M3, I was a bit of a motorcycle track nut and have tracked / gone through several bikes over the years - Starting with a GSXR 1000, Two Yamaha R6 (trackbikes), a Ducati 1098, Streetfighter, a Duc 848 (Trackbike) and finally back to a Yamaha R6 ... Japanese or Italian they both had their different strengths and weaknesses... I typically put down much better laptimes on my R6 vs my 848 .. My 848 blew its engine on the track while my R6 was rock solid all through...

After thinking about it for a while I'm going to follow mlifxs and devo's advice... Though I can get a GTR right now, I think I'll enjoy my M3 for another year and will plan to get a 2013 GTR sometime middle of next year.. I now feel certain that I'll eventually own a GTR but right now I just bought my M3, and its a fantastic car too.. yes, not as fast and not as aggressive .. but its well balanced and tons of fun. I'll just slap a Akra Evo on it and call it a day for now... Waiting for a GTR and getting it next year vs getting it now will also make it feel extra special...
