Don`t know for sure; the 8 throtthle valves are wright up the engine, so it takes more room. Look close to the air filter, it has roughly the same maesurements like the PD. So it sticks out, and yet there are the EU safety maesures to follow, so even more room is needed. It is a little bit off speculation, but it`s the best explanation I can give you. I agree that cosmetic reasons are evident, but still think there is also a safety item in it; BMW did a fine job and combined them perfectly. |

I guess I am missing the point of this thread, I know that 25.4mm is 1 inch. In the automotive world no one uses cm for measurements, everything is in mm.

Power dome
My opinion is, though the wart may have some function, it's mainly there to differentiate the M3 from standard 3s. BMW seems to be trying harder to do this with the E92 than the E46--front & rear fascias, mirrors, CF roof, gills, etc.

And yet your car would have its ass handed to it on the Nordschleife.
Any idiot can drag race, hardly skillful is it, going though the gears in a straight line.

Looking at the pics posted by swamp2, I see only one airbox on the left side (driver side). If not mistaken, the V8 from 5 (540 e39) series have one airbox on each side.
DO you think space constraint only limit for one airbox? Do you think 2 airboxes will improve intake even better? |

Just as an interesting aside, the E60 M5 does not use a power dome, nor does the Hartge E90 V10.
The E90 I6 N52 has just enough clearance for the strut bar, which in turn, rests against the hood thermal insulation pad. |

They should tone it down if it does not serve any usefull function..... Also, are the side vents real on both models? |

Perhaps these regulations weren't in force when these two were introduced?
