'Polished' Frozen paint

Hey guys,

So my car went into a service yesterday at BMW and they gave it a complementary clean. To my surprise as was driving away the bonnet was glowing! It looks metallic and has completely lost its frozen look.

I ask the dealer if they had used any wax and they said they didn't, only a cold wash was done. On the drive back home I realised it could be the drying method? Maybe cloths with wax on? Or some sort of product left in the pressure washer? I visited another dealership and he said it's not reversible.

So basically it's my word vs there's. What do I do?

Here's a photo I got, sorry for the poor quality but all I managed to get. You can clearly see how reflective it is on the bulge.

Any help is much appreciated,

Cheers

I would fight this to death! You paid a nice premium for this, and they messed it up somehow! I have used microfiber (more aggressively than I should) and pressure washed, and this hasn't happened.

I always tell the service advisor to put DO NOT WASH on the repair order and I also put a pre-printed page in huge font with the same message on the dashboard. Given all the "noise" from BMW about care for the matte paints, they should take care of this for you. Good luck.

Chances are, they use a machine to wash the car since they go through so many cars a day. The brushes and wiping can scratch or "polish" the paint like in your case.

Good idea jhbrennan, guess I've just learned the hard way..

Just hope I can get past them backing that they didn't do anything. Because they clearly have. Got photos 4 days before as well.

Also, I use dr.beasleys products, I was thinking maybe they buffered the sealant? But surely not, as it contains no waxes or silicones of any sort.. Pah, tomorrow I'll know more.

Cheers

Yeah, someone here gave me the same tip... Happy I implemented in time. They should take care of this!

Just wash it a few times and you'll be fine. The dealer wash must of had a wax stage in it. Nothing to worry about :-)

It does not work once that finish is gone

if they polished hard only way is repainting it

Repaint it???? Dont agree with you, just wash it with the matte shampo and apply the cleaner-sealant-finishing products of Dr Beasleys kit and you will get the matte finishing back, the cleaner will remove all previous wax that was applied, not a big deal!

Exactly right!
Just remove the wax coat and the matte finish will be there, I had the same problem with my frozen black exterior, got washed with a car shampoo that contained wax came back glossy, I just used Dr Beasley matte shampoo+cleaner+seal+matte finishing and the matte tone is back

Yeah but it doesnt mean that you will permanently remove the matte finishing coat, it is still there, just have to remove the wax coat you placed on top of it and the matte finishing will show again

If the paint was really polished, it will remove the matte look and make it smooth. Polishing is not just a wax layer, it means the paint is leveled to make it shiny and even. The matte paint is really just a textured/rough finish. Once you smooth it out, it is gone forever.

If they really did polish it, the only recourse is to repaint it.

Hang one of these in your rear view mirror next time you go to the dealer. You can buy them from here

A bit of wet sanding will roughen it up again.

according to OP they only washed his car, they didn't even wax it so I don't think it was polished, maybe they used a car shampoo with wax, same as they did with mine and believe me that is not a big deal!

Thanks for the help guys! Well went into the dealership yesterday and they guy who cleaned the car admitted to putting a little shampoo into the pressure washer in front of the service manager. Also, they didn't dry the car with anything. They gave me permission to wash it myself and if I can't get it back to its original condition they'll do whatever they can to fix it. Genuine nice guys with a simple mistake.

Going to follow your routine edu on getting the wax off. Cheers for the help.

Hey Justin, if you already ordered the BMW nano wax, apply it instead of the matte finishing from Dr Beasleys kit and it will revive the matte look even more than Dr Beasley finishing but either way will work out for you
