Turning off CEL

Hey Guys,

What's the least expensive way to turn off CEL if I added test pipes? I don't really want to get a tune yet.

+1, those usually go for 200-300 but better to put that toward a tune for much more of a benefit

Any exhaust. The problem though is that it may prevent the SES light from appearing for issues other than catalyst efficiency.

I'm in the same position as you. I want to get challenge sport x pipes but I don't want to have to purchase a 1000$ tune to get rid of the CEL.

Just deal with it. There's no harm in having the cel light on.

I actually don't mind leaving the engine light on at all, but the only concerns I have is, 1, taking my car in for a service and the workers at BMW voiding my warranty because I tell them that the xpipes are the cause of the CEL. And two, not knowing if I have an actually issue other than the xpipe cause the engine light would always be on.

Question, could BMW code it so that the CEL goes away?

As others have said the Akra Delete-R is the best option. A tune would also take of the CEL. Good luck!

There could be if it's something not related to cat efficiency.

My CEL is on and I received repairs under warranty. Never voided my warranty or anything. My dealer is pretty cool about aftermarket stuff.. and I have a few friends there so that helps too.

As for the second point, just check your system control every now and then on the iDrive system to see if anything other than increased emissions is throwing, that's what I do. Ill be getting a tune soon though!

Keep in mind that there are hundreds of codes that can be stored and only increased emissions will display on the iDrive. So the SES light means that one or more emissions related codes are stored. So if you have cat efficiency fault, and then throw codes for fuel pressure, system too lean, etc, it will only show increased emissions on the iDrive, regardless of the amount of faults you actually have.

The good thing is that if it's something major, you'll get engine malfunction/reduced power.

I meant to include in my original post that I believe the tune is worth the extra money. Just tuning the engine to deal with the decreased back pressure makes sense on such an expensive engine in my opinion. I have BPM stage II with test pipes and an Akra slip on and I am very satisfied.

So you are concerned about the workers voiding your warranty because the CEL is on...but then you go on and ask a question if BMW can code off the CEL (assumiing the same workers that would work on your car in the first place??) Then they definitely know that you are modified. That isn't making much sense.

It was just a random question I decided to throw in.

Actually I asked my friend that is a tech at my local dealership and he said they are not allowed to mess with disabling any emission related codes... maybe he could, but I didn't want him to risk his job to turn off a light

In bank 2 sensors, you can install spark plug non-foulers that space the sensors out of the exhaust path and fool it into thinking it has a cat. You just have to drill out the foulers, so the sensors will fit the I.D.

Hope this helps.
