Hit a pothole...

...coming home on Rt.4 in Hackensack NJ, it was dark so visibility was low. I hit the left side of my car head on and around 45mph and immediately had a sinking feeling in my stomach. Now the question is...how will I know if my tires/wheels are alright? My TPMS light did not go off or any other light for that matter. Coming home after, I did not have any vibrations and my steering felt fine. Should I still be concerned? How about the dreaded tire bubbles? Where would they show up?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated....thank you in advance.

I know the area. Lots of little hidden gems hiding on the roads around North NJ. Sorry to hear about your bump!

I'd inspect the wheel in the morning, if the wheel is still visually round double check to make sure the tire is holding air. If you do wind up getting bubbles they will manifest over time and get larger. Unfortunately you will have to replace the tire if that happened.

Maybe get the tire rebalanced just incase.

Look for bubbles and deformities in the sidewall (front and back). Lost two of my front tires the same night that way on my old 335 thanks to Rt. 80's wonderful moon craters. Good luck.

sorry to hear. I hit a pothole ~ the same speed as you did on the 20s to my A6. The outside of the wheel was OK - the inside had a bend on it. The part of the sidewall with the the rim protector bead developed a bubble on it. I would suggest to check the inside part of the wheel that hit the pothole - just in case.

Also, check in a few days. Sometimes it takes a while for blisters to appear.

Were you eastbound or westbound? I frequent that road quite often. It's pretty bad in general in the northern NJ/NY area. Hope there's no damage.

Jack up that corner, spin the wheel and check the inside and outside rim for trueness side to side and up and down. Inspect the insider and outside of the tire as well. Should take 5 minutes. You should find anything other than a blister that appears a week later or an invisible fracture in the rim.

A lot of times it sounds a lot worse when driving than it actually is. I've hit a couple and had the same sinking feeling in my stomach that you had. No issues though so far.

Keep an eye on it for bubbling, or if you're really worried jack it up and spin it around to check the whole tire inside and out. I think it'll work out just fine though

That sucks, do you have tire insurance? I've had to replace my front tires and the wheels repaired 4 times now due to potholes. You should notice a bubble where the tire impacted, hopefully the wheel is fine.

Like others have said, I too have lost 2 front tires to bubbles due to bottomless craters.
PA is famous for them. I now have the Dealership visually check and road force balance regularly.

OP: sorry to hear of your misfortune!

Update: No bubbles and no air leak, but I'm going to have it aligned and balanced just to play it safe. I fucking hate NJ/NY roads.
