I'm hoping to move into an E92 Melbourne Red M3 later this year (wife and I plan on picking up the car at the Performance Center in South Carolina).

How do you like the DCT? After my dreaded experience with my steptronic tranny failure in my 2000 323i (reverse gear failure and I wound up doing a manual tranny swap) I'm hesitant to get anything other than a manual tranny. Are DCT's known for any issues involving expensive repairs?

yea im always around at meets, ill still keep going after the car is gone just to keep in touch with everyone. But that would be awesome picking the car up there, i stopped by there on my way down to atlanta one time and took the tour and all it was pretty cool. i couldn't be happier with the DCT, its great and fast. Also with the traffic in our area i love that i can just pop into drive when im tired and all. But good luck on the future car. Ull love it.

Thanks bro! How does the DCT compare with the SMG in terms of the "automatic mode" (sorry I don't know how best to refer to that feature)? If I recall, the automatic mode in an SMG is somewhat jerky, but I'm guessing that's not the case with the DCT.

My biggest fear with getting the DCT is that at some point it might malfunction and will require very expensive repairs, just like my failed steptronic auto tranny. I also have a friend with an E46 M3 who had to shell out a lot of money to have his SMG tranny repaired.

Im not to familiar with the SMG, but i think i heard they had some problems with it in the new model e46's. The DCT isn't jerky at all. Very smooth, changes faster than a heart beat. I wouldn't worry to much about the dct giving out since its in been out on the M3's since the 08 model. I was close to the 400hp club to the wheels, and it did just fine.
