The M3 tested in this article must have been a factory freak. Was the test done in Europe? If so the better times could be explained by the higher quality/grade fuel available in Europe. I remember the first ever driving test I read about the e92 M3 (I think it was R&T); it was a melbourne red 6MT tested in Germany that did 0-60 in 4.1s and 0-100 in 9.4s. Every test of the M3 (esp the 6MT) I have seen since then had been considerably slower, with the 6MT 0-60 times of 4.4-4.5s and 0-100 times of around 10.2-10.6s.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Please do not tell me "because the Octane rating numbers are higher in Europe".

Am I the only one who noticed a gov. limited top speed of 178 mph? Perhaps a typo?

The M3 even had the factory optional (in Europe) top speed limiter removed/set higher.

Fuel type had nothing to do with the amazing numbers. Highest grade in Europe is 98 octane, which is 93 octane in the US:

RON Reaserch Octane Number. (Used in Europe and elswhere in gas stations)
MON Motor Octane Number.
AKI Anti-Knock Index. This is the number that is posted on the gas station in the USA as "Octane". It is derived as (RON + MON)/2

That makes sense. By the way, that option is pretty expensive, almost 2,500 Euros.

The "master" performance database of the M3 v competitors is here. If you want a better idea of typical times and results. Someone should add the latest results (please consider formatting carefully if you add results). 3.9 is impressive. Other bests were beat by the car as well. Must be some combination of (probably roughly in this order)

-Conditions
-Revised DSC
-Lower suspension
-Tires
-Revised EDC

I know there is still some debate about whether DSC and or EDC software is actually revised. I think there is some evidence here to indicate that DSC has been revised.

Does C&D test the cars with DSC on?

Best regards,

Incorrect - i use Shell V Power Racing 100 octane - widely available here in Germany.

BMW (and other manufacturers) have been known to give their 'press' cars a bit of a 'tweak' to achieve better performance in comparison tests though.

Why are you wasting money on 100 Octane??? It doesn't come close to hot enough for even 91 Octane to not be high enough. Are you running a really high compression ratio or something?

These rags are hilarious! The M should win on fun alone but since when does it run a 3.9 and 9.4 to 60 and 100, respectively. C'mon...

Makes sense since the press cars that have been tested in Europe have posted the best numbers (this test and the first ever test by R&T).

I think its because of the ZCP (Competition Package)
However even the stock M3 back in 2008 ran 4.1 0-60 so 0.2 secs shaved off because of ZCP Quite possible actually!

How would ZCP get a better 0-60? No more power, no weight reduction I guess if launch control was modified? But I bet C&D use a 1 foot rollout anyway so launch control wouldn't likely be applicable.

Yeah im not sure ZCP would make any difference unless traction was an issue and the ZCP is proven to have better start traction. From what I can tell, the ZCP DSC program just allows a little more slip, which wouldn't equate to more traction.

I'm fairly sure they run with any and all settings to just get the best time possible, i.e. no set standard.

Well the obvious answer is that it does so when C&D test the new M3 ZCP model. What do you think - they used bum equipment, they lied? Have a look at the database I referred to earlier. These numbers are only ever so slightly better than the best non ZCP cars tested to date. It really sucks how much bang for the buck you can get from an M3 vs. Porsche, huh?

There is a forum member on here who bought an ex 335i press car/demo from a dealership in Europe - his stock dyno results were quite interesting
