At 6k miles, car needs oil
I did a nice high speed drive in the hills and the next day I was on a road trip, about 200 mi. The oil indicator popped on and said Please add 1 quart of oil as soon as possible. I called the dealer and he said I should be fine cause they have 9 quarts in there. It still says the same thing, just 1 quart of oil, but I'm curious if it only tells you when it's 1 quart low and doesn't have any further measurement.
I have been driving my car regularly for 2 weeks. Also, I drove back home the 200 mi from the mountains with the low oil indicator. I missed my appt this week, so am going next week for other service. At that point it will be 2.5 weeks. Think I'm ok?

Why not just add a quart????????? Quite a few of us ride with a qt in the trunk. I got a quart container bag with velcro on the bottom of it just to be all fancy... Drop some oil in your car.

If you read the manual you would see it says to add oil immediately to avoid engine damage. No idea why the dealer would tell you its ok to drive 200+ miles with low oil.
Not saying your engine is damaged, but like the poster above said, you should always carry a quart in your trunk as the M3 can consume oil frequently. Also, its usually best to add 1/2 quart at a time and remeasure. The oil sensor can be finicky and many times when it says +1qt if you add a full qt it will then tell you its overfilled... |

I agree with the dealer. Being down one quart on a sump of this size is not going to be a big deal. Would I make a habit of it? No.

Just refrain from driving it like an M car and you will be fine. I guess you have learned your lesson and will have a quart at all times like most. Safe travels.

OP, I suggest getting this for your trunk:
http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-BMW-Sp.../dp/B007T9JZWE Perfect for holding a bottle of oil, and it includes wipes/gloves.
