Contour or GoPro?

With my team for GoldRush rally shaping up I figured its time to start camera shopping.

On of our passengers is a professional photographer, so the larger cameras are covered, but itd be great to have something easy to mount on the outside of the car and in the cabin to capture the fun.

For those who have experience with both what do you think? Video quality seems to go either way based on the condition, so the deciding factor maybe more form and use related

From what I have read it seems that the contour is the best set up as of now. I know Brian (Latebraking) who tracks his car all the time has both and he told me that the contour is the best between the two in his opinion.

I am also looking at these myself. So I would be curious to see what others have to say

Contour. I think it's way more versatile! And you can view through your iPhone (If you have one)

I just looked it up and the technology looks pretty cool. I am definitely leaning towards one of the Contour models. I can't seem to find this, but does either brand offer the ability to start and stop recording via an iPhone/remote?

This would be extremely helpful for the camera(s) mounted outside the car

Garage List
I recently saw the Contour in Wired and looked it up and that looks a lot more versatile than my GoPro and can get some neat features including the GPS version.

Having said that I like my GoPro camera, haven't had any issues with it. The quality is great especially in 1080. Let's be honest though as nice as it is to have a camera that can film in that resolution, unless you have the worlds fastest internet connection it'll take hours on end to upload anything. So just plan on 720 or lower unless your using it for personal use lol

Does the Contour have an external mic input? The GoPro HD now comes with one, a big plus over the old version.

Damn I never really looked into the Contour, I've been rockin GoPro since the original wide version came out. But the Contour does look cool with their features, the final judgement will come down to video quality.

Now to google "contour vs gopro" to see some comparos. I think the view on iPhone feature will win out on my new action cam setup though. I love cool ass toys like this!

Hmm, on their website on the Contour+ model it shows that they equip it with a 2.5mm jack for a mic but I don't see that they make a mic for it.

Seems like GoPro has better packages too...

Dont know if theres a new contour out or something. But imo the gopro is better. The contour mic is garbage. And the gopro has more features.

I saw that Contour+ has mic input, but Contour+ is $500... f that

And to get bluetooth (which enables iPhone viewfinder) is $300...

The bluetooth feature that enables iPhone viewfinder is $300. This feature is not in the basic $200 model.

Where do you see that the Bluetooth ability is extra? The way I'm reading it looks like the GPS and + models have it built in...?

EDIT: Ok, the GPS model is capable, but requires the Connect View Card. That card IS included in the + model.

Sorry, I see that my post is confusing. I meant you have to buy the $300 model to get bluetooth functionality.. I will fix my post.

GoPro is coming out with a wi-fi / iphone / remote control add-on in April.
Apparently, the app will allow you to view and control on your smart phone.

With that said, and the quality shown in this video, I think the GoPro2 wins. I like the design of the Contour, but the video quality of the GoPro better. And I'm already familiar with the GoPro so I'll probably stick with it when I decide to pick up another action sports camera.

One of the big car magazines just did a compare and the GoProHD2 won out on image quality and functionality. When the Wifi bacpak comes out, you can control something like 10 GoPro's with your phone and view on your iPhone. The HD version had been on sale for around $170 lately at a couple stores.

guys, do yourselves a favor and check out some of the test out there on these 2 cams.
The contour is nicely made and compact, whereas the GoPro Hero HD 2 looks like plastic crap, when you look at the vids they produce, there is a wide gulf in quality.
There are 2 or 3 good tests out there, with C&D being one of them.

The GoPro Hero HD 2 has better color accuracy, no rolling shutter problems, and it also deals with changes in lighting better.

I wish they would put the GoPro electronics in something like the contours case!
