This was my first non-manual car. I was torn between my love of shifting and love of cutting-edge technology. Was always intrigued by the SMG in the m5 with its insane-fast shifts and sweet-sound rev matches. Loved my e39 m5 but the notchiness from 1-2 especially when cold was like nails on a chalkboard and left me jaded with BMW transmissions (although I heard they got it right with the 1m), reading about these problems carrying over into the e9x drivetrain lead me to explore the other transmission. Driving an m3 DCT on a canyon road is what sold me the transmission and very glad with my choice.

I shopped for this car dead set on 6mt and as I went from dealer to dealer for test drives, not a single one carried a manual in stock. Not even cpo.

I regretfully got auto on my e46 so I know this time I would do it right. Undortunately all the ones I drove were dct. Seeing how amazingly fast it shifted and far more superior to smg, I just took the dive know there's no way I could shift as fast as that.

Sometimes when I see pics or cars with 6mt I feel a little regret that I didn't get that...like the grass is always greener on the other side. It usually comes when I'm not driving it.

When I drive the dct, all regrets go out the window. All forgotten.

I tried to teach my wife long ago, it ended in disaster (too long a story to tell here ). Did you ever try to teach your wife?

i choose the 6mt because of the driver involvement without ever driving a dct car. love the 6mt but would like the speed and ease of the dct some times on the track.

Very well put..
but what makes you say 6MT may not be around?!!!
especially on such a car?
that would be insane..
well..we've seen worse..of course but I don't think 6MT will be discontinued as a whole idea in the future..unless if everything becomes electric
with those fearless (infinite gear) clutches (nissan style) etc..in which case will be the
end of an era...

You bring up a good point.

I have read hundreds of DCT/6MT posts, and there's one thing I've gathered: Several people with 6MT confess that they will probably get DCT for their next car, but I never read of any DCT owners (even the formerly life-long MT folks) regret it and want to go back to 6MT for the next car.

I'd be lying if I said that conjecture didn't influence my decision just a bit

Had 3k down on a 1M...was a little disappointed with it. Got a 6MT M3, and couldn't be happier. I figure if I want a DCT the option will ALWAYS be there in the future, but I might not be able to get a manuel. Added bonus is the fact that you actually have to know how to drive the car, anyone can't just hop in the car and put it in drive. I taught my wife how to drive on the old 320i so that before we leave she can drive the M3 on the autobahn.

There's been a few guys who went from DCT to 6MT and others mentioning they plan to go back. They both have enough merits to justify going either way.

DCT because I had knee issues... previously owned a 6MT (in all of my cars, save one, for the last 23 years). Now that I have truly experienced a DCT, I will only ever buy that tranny regardless of knee issues. I also was a "anything other than a 6MT is blasphemy" guy until I owned a DCT. Now I respect both.

M-DCT. I absolutely love this transmission. I knew that I would like it because I liked to paddle shift my C63 and that transmission was much slower. I spent twelve years driving manual transmissions so I'm no stranger to them. I just like the speed of the shifting of the M-DCT. I always drive in manual mode in my M3.

I agree that rowing the gears is fun/involving but you have complete control with a DCT too... not just with the 6MT.

Had DCT in the last BMW, was pretty sweet. Got the 6MT on the M3. Prior to that didn't have stick for some 10 years (2000 M Coupe) liked it back then. Today, it's more like "Love this. This blows. Love this. Fuck this. Love this. Next car DCT for sure. Man i love this manual." But last weekend drove from NJ to Hershey PA, no traffic. Sweet ride to the big RV show (another crazy hobby of mine) 2.5 hrs there 2.5 hrs back. Loved the car more, loved the 6MT really enjoyed the drive.

6MT because it allows me to control the exhaust like an instrument. Sometimes I don't want a fast shift, sometimes I do. I also get satisfaction of a well executed blip and downshift.

I am impressed with both but 6mt allows me to play solo.

Love for all things mechanical forced me to stick with my MT! I'm not a big fan of drive-by-wire or computer controlled transmissions (at least they still give us one as an option)... I wouldn't mind rolling down my windows or adjusting the seats manually either. Hmmm - can you "pop-start" a DCT?
