IMO there's a few reasons to go with DCT:

You love the Track and go often
same for drag strip I guess
traffic
just plain sick of 6MT

I'm not sure there's any other reason?

Basically the ONLY reason I would order DCT is if you are sick of driving a stick. I know it's a mechanical wonder and the shifts are so smooth... who cares. I'll get a DCT only when I simply can't stand driving 6MT anymore. so basically my reason will be city driving/traffic.

I.
+1! I would get bored of DCT. MT in general will make almost any car fun to drive. Only time I'll get DCT is if I have some physical injury that'll prevent me from driving MT for the rest of my life (god forbid)

Same here. 99% driving in S mode.

But this is for normal autos, I didn't experiment too much with the DCT auto mode yet.

I'm not upset in anyways even if the auto mode doesn't work or exist. I'm coming from MT cars, so shifting is something I don't mind, yet alone in a DCT shifting doesn't really take too much effort
Only time I'm on auto is when I'm briefly juggling/multitasking steering/driving, cigarette (& trying to light it), operating the windows or moonroof to let out smoke, cellphone, glancing @ documents (work-related hazard), etc (i.e. the perfect storm).

I don't agree or disagree with that, just saying.
what makes you think that?

I lived in NYC with an e36 M3 5MT. Now I live in Chicago with an e92 M3 DCT. Once you get to know the DCT's features you really enjoy it IMO. The road trip from Chicago to Vegas and back for MFest was a breeze and a lot of fun with DCT.

No, I learned to drive a manual and to double clutch and H&T back in the early 70's on my mom's Toyota Corolla. I actually entered that thing in a club-level night rally race. Don't know how I talked mom into that. But, that car survived. Most of my cars over the years have been manuals.

However, I test-drove a DCT equipped 335is on the weekend and was quite impressed with the tranny. I couldn't believe how quickly it did a D7 to D3 direct downshift when merging onto the highway. The sales guy is arranging for me to test drive an M3 soon.

I agree that it really is personal preference. Yea I think DCT has it's potential issues, but what piece of technology doesn't. On a personal level, I enjoy shifting through the gears makes the ride very enjoyable.

Pilots often say something along the lines of "it's better to be on the ground, wishing you were in the air - than being in the air, wishing you were on the ground."

Well, I think it's better to have 6MT, wishing you had DCT, than having DCT, wishing you had 6MT!!!

I own 6MT and wouldn't have it any other way. So much more fun, and not much different on speed and efficiency.
