Question M Performance Exhaust VS Oem Exhaust Mod

Looking to get some feedback on M Performance vs Oem Exhaust mod.

Many are saying waste of $$$ to buy M performance, however I've heard great things about it. Great sound, no drone, BMW quality, etc...

Not to downplay Oem Exhaust mod, I just have a problem with cutting open and modding a factory M3 exhaust. Can't help but feel ghetto doing that...

Input much appreciated

How about M-Performance Exhaust and Macht Schnell Track Pipes?

This probably has to be one of my favorite setups.

The exhaust is overpriced for a muffler but I would probably do it again. I had the performance exhaust in my old E90 and one in my newer E90 so I guess I did .

Well it's up to you. Either save thousands of $$ and do the oem mod but feel "ghetto" or buy the M perf exhaust and feel classy (I presume).

OEM Exhaust Mod and Race X-Pipe (unbranded).

Keep in mind there are no secondary cats or resonators in this configuration, so there will be a much louder exhaust note.

Had dinner with one of the M Driving school instructors (just did the 2 day M school) and he said he really loves the sound of the M Perf. Exhaust. He said once you drive with it for a while and things burn in, the drone goes away. BTW, all the driving school instructors are contracted out. None of them are BMW employees. He said he wasn't being paid to pitch anything. He just said he loved the sound. Even funnier was watching him get into a 10 yr old Hyundai to drive home after class. I guess when you drive M cars at work all day, what you drive home doesn't matter.

Your right I'm sure it doesn't. But the oem mod (2 perforated pipe method) does sound excellent. I bet the M perf sounds great in person too. But does the M perf sound better? Maybe, haven't heard one to compare. $3k Better? Most certainly not.

Not worth the 3K+ price tag for a muffler but it does sound great. I am happy with mine and would probably do it for a third time if I got another BMW.

Anything BMW is overly priced anyhow.

The M Performance sound definitely improves with age as the insulation wears out....it's like a Stradivarius!

Actually I wonder if the perforated OEM exhaust mod sounds more like the MPE exhaust, as the MPE's exhaust design is unrestricted, with perforated pipes surrounded by insulation..though probably the MPE's rare Inconel/Titanium combo does create some unique harmonics at higher RPMs.

OEM exhaust mod, after break-in sounds glorious IMO. I've heard quite a couple of options out there and this to me is the perfect balance. Near stock when cruising around, then when you step on it, it roars but not obnoxiously. Drone is also minimal... i'd say only when cruising on 7th gear on the highway you get a slight drone. Nothing that's going to make you hate it at all.

Just my 2 cents from having the OEM mod for about 3 months now.

I'm OCD about my exhausts, spent a year fiddling with my '11 S4 and just gave up after the 3rd setup, couple other cars before that.

The M Performance is comparable to the lesser(cost) exhaust setups if you're going to flip exhausts due to sound, restlessness, being unhappy, droning, etc... got it on sale for $3100 shipped and thought that was fair. Hard part was waiting the 4mos for the car to arrive. Mine doesn't drone, or I'm never in the drone rpm(6sp here) so I never notice it. Very happy with it overall fwiw and I'm not looking to mod/fidgit/change anything with it which is an accomplishment for me.

Happy shopping.

I don't know where this droning discussion is coming from. I've had the exhaust for over 18 months now and I can't claim that I've experienced the drone. In fact I will say, it is less dronier than the stock around the 2k rpm range.

The exhaust note is exotic, and it is getting deeper all the time, and since getting the BPM Sport tune recently, I've noticed it to be louder and throatier (if that makes sense. I think so . I think one has to experience it in person rather than watch video clips. I haven't heard the OEM mod note, so cannot discuss comparision.

If you have the $$$s then by the /// Performance exhaust. If you want something on a budget I suggest one take the mod route. Money in your pocket and you're happy.

Check out http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=493092 and http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...&postcount=212.

For people who think the M Performance Exhaust is expensive, think again because it is made of Inconel, which is the exhaust material used on F1 exhaust. And the tips are polished titanium. The major benefit of MPE is weight saving at least 20lb, other than that, sounds similar to perforated OEM mod but resonate better.

Personally I would leave it alone since your car is Alpine White.

Just my opinion though.

You will not be disappointed. The Eisenmann Inconel cat-back system costs $7.5+k, which highlights that the materials for this are not cheap.
