Kinda unrelated question but since you guys have seen plenty of bearings and change them, what engine oil do you guys recommend?

We still stay with the recommended 10W60 from BMW.

2011 34,200 DCT M3

A dealership stripped this M3's oil drain plug so since the pan had to be dropped and replaced the customer figured it was a good time to address the bearings despite the low mileage.

The bearings show even, consistent wear patterns. We've seen cars with similar mileage in far worse condition so it appears as though this car was cared for.

2008 DCT M3 85,xxx miles

Michelle definitely gets the award for getting her money's worth on her original rod bearings. This is some heaviest wear we've encountered, but the car has been babied and cared for during her ownership from 50k miles. Even with track days, she takes care of oil services routinely and early. She had been keeping up with her Blackstone Oil samples during oil intervals since she purchased the car and none of them were ever alarming. Now that she resides on the east coast, we stayed on her to get the bearings taken care of and it's a good thing we did! This is the issue with relying entirely on BSL data. It can be a great way to keep track of metallic wear, but it is no means a guarantee. I am not bashing them by any means as we've caught bad internals many times thanks to BSL's data over the years and they are great to deal with. We'll continue to do so, we are just here to provide the service and information as we get it.

As usual - top to bottom are Cylinders 8 -1 respectively and left column is uppers and right is lowers.

PM's replied. We've been getting a lot of interest outside of the tri state area and we can ship kits out to people who have their own local shop they trust.

Gotta say, I love the fact that you guys are posting up mileage details, driver diligence re: warm up, etc, and pics of the OEM bearings. Keep it up!

With reference to the bearings with excessive wear and/or surface scoring, have you recommended any changed cranks due to same?

If not, what is your process to inspect the crank when face does with a similar situation? Is it just a visual? A magnified visual? Or is crank 'damage' not really a concern as the rod bearings are sacrificial 'wear' items?

Thanks for the info!

Thanks, trying to provide as much information here as I can that way people can compare and contrast and check for patterns etc.

While we are in there for the bearing service we do perform an inspection of all the visible areas around the crank. We have only seen maybe two cranks that showed signs of damage in all of the years doing this and those were on engines that were beyond abused and we expected to see it. Normally for the average car that rolls through here, we do not see any damage to them at all, even the higher mileage cars. The material of the crank vs the material of the bearing, the bearing by design is on the receiving end of all of that wear.

PM's answered. Thanks guys!

Pretty average wear shown here. Uppers have their typical wear patters some with more movement than others and the lower corners have wear marks as well. Nothing to be excited about, but not alarming by any means either.
