I didn't know I was racing... (hint: I wasn't)
I've never had a shortage of people cutting me off in traffic, or any other variety of random, distracted events... Regardless of what car I was driving. I'm guilty of a few boneheaded moves myself. But does the M3 attract more than its share?
For example: today, some co-worker (who is WAY to proud of his Honda Accord) was bragging how he "beat a Corvette off the line". We all had a good laugh at him. Then later I realized: maybe he DID beat a Corvette off the line. The 'Vette driver had no idea he was in a race. I think this happens to me in the M3 on occasion. Happened tonight with a 328i who had nothing but clear road to get right, but he comes out of my blind spot to get in front, brake, and make a hard right. Zero cars behind me where he could get right and skip the whole passing thing. Congrats. He won. The weird part of this whole diatribe is that it kinda bothers me. For example: enough to write this post. But it doesn't bother me enough to start racing on the street. So, to you, random Accord (or whatever) driver. Go tell your friends how you whooped some guy in an M3. They may all slap you high fives, but they don't really believe you. Except for the fact it's actully true. I just didn't know I was racing. And if I did... I wouldn't anyhow. |

I get the occasional jerk trying to mess with me. On public streets, I'll get out of their way and let them win every time. I'm not out there trying to prove anything.

I have my fair shares of people cutting me off as well. I've learned that the safest place to experience our cars to their fullest potentials is at a closed course or a race track. Too many idiots on the roads today trying to prove themselves. They might have just installed their $100 exhaust and thought they are faster now.
I have also had some "Non-Contender" cars passed me. I just stayed cool and moved on. Think of it this way, if a 10 year old kid tried to pick a fight with a professional boxer, what would you think might happen? The pro boxer probably just chuckled and said,"How cute!" One of the best things of driving the ///M3 is, you do not have to prove anything, knowing with full confidence that you are driving one of the best cars in the world.

I used to "race" on the street quite frequently when I was younger (had a 350z at the time). That all stopped when one day a car full of kids in a Subaru WRX tried to race me and nearly got themselves killed when they spun out and slammed into a concrete barrier at 80mph. When you're 20, you don't think about the consequences, and I assume that is the age group of most of these "racers." I like the boxer analogy, and that's what I think when some idiot in a riced out civic revs at me now. Or something like "psh, I could crush you with my wallet."

I don't get people trying to race the M3 very often. But when I'm driving the Elise around, everybody and their brother wants a go. More often than not it's American muscle, a Neon or an old Ford Bronco...

I have considered getting rid of my car for this exact reason. As much as I love the vehicle, the incessant attempt at measuring an athlete versus a couch potato just gets old...running to the grocery store is a full fledged obstacle course...and God forbid two lanes merge...it's an all out race to hurry up and wait. I find myself, more and more driving in auto because I can't enjoy sequential shifting. A heavy downshift is supposedly code for code for "block m3s progression at all costs!"

I had a Mazda B3000 pickup truck, factory-jacked-up and bright red, stock exhaust, tires, everything. (no flame-stickers along the sides, neither.) People would race me to the merge point, or try to get that extra nine-feet farther ahead in an ocean of stalled traffic. While I'm in a pickup truck. Really? If you got rid of your m3, and got something more plain, you'd really hate yourself when someone else cuts you off later. It would be like, "D'oh! I guess it wasn't only my M3...well, that sucks, wish I had it back now." - V .
