Plasti-dip for track use

Just curious if anyone has used plasti-dip on the front of their car just to protect it from track debris. If so, how easy was it to take off afterwards? I'm curious about this product, because paint taping the car every time would be a hassle.

Just run naked and wipe off the rubber marks with Goof-off.

I got sick of taping up, and I have more paint damage from DD road use than track days. The PITA rubber marks are the ones behind the front wheels more than the front/hood ones anyway.

yup looks like you have to use SOOO much that it would cost too much each time and may be difficult to remove in some tight spots around the bumper.

Easier to just wash it off after. I use automotive Goo-Gone.

What do you do about the oily residue that Goo-Gone leaves behind?

Thanks bro, found it and it's def. the option for me to try out. I also pinged another member who said they were going to use on their Porsche GT for the track. Will report back what I hear.

Product is called Paintshield 5720. Literally made for the purposes I was describing above. $25 a gallon, and you probably use 1/6 of the gallon to do a front mask for bumper, hood, fenders.

So what I heard from the Porsche GT owner was it's simply awesome and works like a charm in dry weather. I guess wet it must peel off or something. He will be writing it up this weekend - stay tuned...

Plastidip is very durable, but you need to put many coats on to get it to peel off easily.

Yep, going with Paintshield 5720 instead that lacquers on easily and peels off easily.

The residue rinses away easily with water.

Ain't no way around it...you write off your paint job if you track regularly. Or just stay in the novice/intermediate groups where not as many cars run slicks which fling stuff.

For rubber marks, I use this with great success. Others use Greased Lightning which might be better...

I agree that the Paintshield 5720 looks interesting but it appears that it dries to only 3 mils thickness. Certainly enough to protect against rubber but the real culprit in my experience is debris causing paint chips. I wonder if 3 mils is thick enough. How thick is a clear bra? My bra works to stop the debris as the only place I get chips is in the gaps between the bra sections.

As mentioned above, tracking is pretty hard on a paint job.

I've heard it does protect to a certain extent. It can go on pretty thick depending on how much you apply. It was literally created for protection from debris, not just dust or bugs.

Although, your comment and proof that the clear bra doesn't help 100% makes me think twice about clear bras. Then again, couldn't you have put painter's tape in those gaps to prevent the chips?

If the clear bra had been wrapped under the front edge of the hood you wouldnt have any damage.

Clear bra's are not a 100% solution although it does prevent a lot of chips. Probably the best solution.

I have a clear bra and there are 3 small areas where the debris ripped through the clear bra. Again, when you follow a car with slicks and they drop a tire on dirt your car gets blasted with rocks and pebbles.

Yes, if the bra was wrapped around the edges it would help. I had very few blems until recently and didn't worry about it and then wham! I think it probably came from following some boneheads in the rain who weren't using their mirrors. I could get the bra redone on the hood and fenders but there are lots of little gaps all over the front bumper. Then maybe I should do the entire hood and wheel arches. How about the lower body and the windshield?

In my mind, the only solution to really protect the paint it to vinyl wrap the entire car or not drive it.

I'm not willing to do either of those so I'll live with the blems. Hey, I'm not as good looking as I once was either!

So for that Paintshield 5720 are you putting it on just for the track day and then peeling it off after? Or are you leaving it on for weeks at a time?

Also do you have any details on how the best way to apply it is?

I clear bra'd the area behind the wheel wells and guess what? I have rock chips far beyond the bra.

I've quit. I refuse to clear nra the whole car. So I just use touch up paint and Langka for the big chips. Otherwise, me no care.
