I inquired of BMW 6 years ago and recieved this reply from the Mobile Tradition archives director:
Dear , the M colors have no representativeness. For this reason I can't give you any legend to the colors. Any interpretation is speculation. Mit freundlichen Grüßen - Best regards Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft Mobile Tradition - Historisches Archiv i. A. Fred Jakobs |

Saw this today:
"The first color, Bavarian blue, is BMW's heritage color. The second color, red, expresses our racing pedigree. Combine them and they form the final M color - purple."

"Friday's schedule called for a concourse at Olympic Park. We also had the option to take a tour of Mobile Tradition (a rare treat since it is not open to the public), the BMW Museum or the Olympic Park. I have done the BMW Museum several times so I opted for Mobile Tradition. Wow! It was interesting to see these rare cars but it was more interesting to hear the history or trivia. For example: Did you know the origins of the M colors (the red, purple and blue stripes)? Red represented Texaco who had partnered with BMW during the early days of M racing, blue represented BMW (and Bavaria) and the purple was used to represent the partnership and to allow for a nice transition between the two colors. (Once the BMW/Texaco partnership ended, BMW had to buyout Texaco for the rights to the red.)"

BMW NA sent me a book after I bought my car and it states directly:
"The left color, Bavarian Blue, is BMW's Heritage color. The right color, red, expresses our racing pedigree. Combine them and they form the middle M color-purple." They printed the book called Uniquely BMW, and I got it in the mail two months after my car I ordered-without asking or knowing about it. Scans of book are two posts above. |

Does anybody honestly care what the colors mean? Geez. By the way, it'd be exactly the same answer if somebody asked why you chose your car color: BECAUSE YOU FREAKING LIKED IT .
