Actually, it was 2004 when he was "promoted" to the newly created post of Director of BMW Group Design, an executive position distanced from the design floor. He has no direct styling reponsibility for BMW future models. He seems to have trained Adrian Van Hooydonk, the current design director, pretty well.

I'm not bothered much by the sight of my muffler. I guess it would have been nicer if it was concealed, but it doesn't bother me.

Yes, his legacy lives on.

You mean the inverted bath tub stuck at the rear of the 7-series? Yeah, that's him!

And, when speaking to the media, he claims, by cooking up shit like that, he was single-handedly "revolutionized" car design at a global scale. Modest fellow, this guy is.

That was actually Hooydonk's first design with BMW.

How is that possible? I am referring to the 7-series platform that was released in 2002. Wasn't Bangle chief designer during the development of that model?

Bangle was the design director, but it was Van Hooydonk's design:

"Not many people have produced a car design that shook the world, but Dutchman Adrian Van Hooydonk did with his 2001 7 Series. At the time, he was director of BMW's California car studio and product design consultancy, Designworks."

Well, I don't know, if he was chief designer, he had a lot to do with it. It's not as if the chief designer sees the designs a few weeks before release and simply signs off on them. The chief designer selects the designer, and that choice itself is highly consequential. Then, there are all sorts of interactions and associated infuences. That magnititude of a project is not executed without serious input and direction from the chief designer.

The exposed muffler is growing on me...the gritty rawness of it...

Agree, Bangle had a big part. Ultimately, though, "Van Hooydonk butt" was just too hard for most people to say!

lol

If you google or cardomain search 1999 Hyundai Sonata you can see, I believe other Hyundais had it too before it appeared on the 7 series and Maybach/S classes...
