The M5 is excellent on the track. Had it for M school some years ago. Not better than a m3, of course, but pretty darn good...the instructors had to yell at me to toss it around harder because I thought it's limits were lower than they actually were

Couple of things I don't get about OP's brother - he couldn't tell from a test drive that he wouldn't like the SMG? And then trade it in for a Yukon of all things? A Yukon does everything you won't like about the m5 and does it worse, without any of the pluses. Well I suppose the shifts are smoother

Seems to me that both were never really in the mix.

Need room to take people to lunch and/or dinner. Sounds like an SUV or town car to me, not a sports sedan.

I absolutely loathed my m6 on the track. The body roll made it feel like a boat and weight transfer felt anything but BMW. Aside from power over steering the car would be in a constant state of understeer. The only redeeming factor of the car was that the s85 and smg were brilliant on the straights

Test drive? What test drive? LOL. Have you shopped for E60 M5s lately? There isn't exactly one at every dealership just waiting to be driven. He had to have this one shipped from Oklahoma City.

I have no idea why he decided on a Yukon. Probably related to the copious amounts of snow we're receiving lately.

Low mileage e39 m5. That is what I did. I had an e90 335i and was needing something w/more power and slightly bigger. I tested my fair share of smg and 6sp manuals. My dealer let me take an smg home for a day. I couldn't get past the gas mileage. And in order to appreciate the e60 m5 you had to keep it above 5k rpm. I ultimately decided on an e39 m5. Just enough space for 4 adults and a plethora of torque. Yes it's an older model, but with only 42k miles on the odometer and the ability to wrench on it w/o a phd sold me.

e39 while classic is sooo dated looking. As much as I do love them, I saw one the other day and man they look really old. If that does not bother a buyer than they are a great car and would love to have one to the collection.

The e60 has more torque 380ish foot pounds vs 368 foot pounds from the e39. The e60 makes 368 foot pounds at 4400 rpms so unless you are driving under 4400 rpms, the e60 m5 is subjectively and objectively faster in every measure including the torque
