I second the OP's comments on the Cayman R versus the GT3. I like the sounds and power of the GT3, but the R is a better option for surviving rush hour traffic and beating on at the track. I know a new cayman is in the pipeline and it will likely be a looker, but it will not be lighter, more powerful or as driver focused as the current R. I say this based on the known engine, power, and weight specs on the new boxster and considering Porsche's past history on positioning the Caymans in the market. Something about the R is just right. Maybe I'm biased though, mines on a truck from Houston right now......just a few more days.

You'll love the Cayman. I've had a bunch of cars over the years, including an '07 Cayman S. I was not totally satisfied with it on track, and spent a few seasons with a 996 GT3, which was a great track car. I'm pretty much through the track stuff now, and recently bought a lightly used 2010 Cayman S with PASM and limited slip differential, which gives me most of what I want in a sports car for the street. But I drove an R, and it is a great driving car. As much as I like the DCT transmission in the M3, it's great to have a clutch and shifter that is as delightful as the Porsche.

Have to echo your views on the Cayman R. It is undoubtably one of the best handling cars out there and very forgiving...drove a few examples at Silverstone recently and I was blown away...I would certainly have replaced my Cayman S for one if I didn't now need a boot, some rear seats and 8400rpm V8.

Make sure you opt for a Sports Exhaust and LSD unless you're going aftermarket.

Yes. I skipped the sport exhaust because I was planning to go aftermarket. However, my M with Akra sounds silent compared to the R with the stock exhaust. I may just pass on the upgrade.

May I ask what options are on your car? Did you get it with or without ac? What color? And did you get the alacantra steering wheel?

Also, I had the famous powersteering pump problem. Everytime I went to SOW or Button I killed my P/S pump. Porsche didn't want to warranty it due to track driving.
I loved my cayman but again I couldn't stand tracking my car with worries. So I ended up parting out the car and sold it last summer. I miss my cayman all the time, I'm kind of regret that I sold it. I should have kept it as my DD. Sadly, later on I found out that lots of problem was due to the shop that worked on my Cayman had no knowledge about cars. That's why my cayman always got into troubles. Anyways.
Here's some pics of my old toy.
Don't mean to threadjack too! Sorry OP
wow, Such a beauty. Is that TechArt bodykit?

Did they give you a great discount on the Cayman R, 2013 brings a new Cayman, it looks very good. If it has any sort of additional space, it will give any M3 a run for it's Money (in terms of overall competitor).

It's still a 2-seater and already has decent storage space for a sports car (frunk and trunk). It won't be competing with the M3 any more than it already does.

Are you responding to my comment, have you seen the spy pictures of the 2013 cayman? It looks like a lot more space, articles are stating that it is bigger in all dimensions, from wheel base to interior....

I think you will be surprised at how many people cross shop the M3 and the Cayman S/R. They are pretty much in the same price range, and for those current or ex M3 owners, the cayman is an affordable option to a 991s which has jumped quite a bit in price.

I agree Nine, some will cross-shop them, but the extra space in 981 vs 987 is minimal at best and I don't think it would really sway anyone who wasn't already decided on a Cayman.

You might be able to fit an extra loaf of bread or something compared to the current car. It's going to have the same proportional difference as the new Boxster has with the old one, which is not much in storage terms.

True. I wonder if they will come out with a "GT" like the GT3 package for the new cayman, I want to believe that the Cayman R was relatively successful.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm quite happy with the car. The steering feel, handling and sounds are everything I had hoped for. With Porsche you just have to experience it and then you either get it or you don't. I'm still getting use to the lack of technologies such as keyless entry and auto headlamps, but it's not that big of a deal. Having said that, if I had to only have one, I'd prob be keeping the m because it's so good at everything. Lucky for me, I don't have that limitation right now, so I will use this as my track toy.
