Very unhappy/disappointed with my BBS CH-R w/ Hanhook V12 tire setup!

I have a e92 M3. I purchased it with the upgraded 19" forged rims with the Michelin PS2 (Pilot sport 2) tires. The car handled like a dream!

About a week ago I put on some BBS CH-R 19x9f 19x10r with 255/35ZR19(front) 295/30ZR19(rear) Hankook V12 tire.

I've had the car for not even a week and I'm so disappointed with it!!

The car handles horrorable! It feels like its on rubber bands. What I mean by that is. I turn the wheel, I feel the chassis move, but it feels like it takes a second for the wheels to catch up! The handling stinks!! And when I take a turn fast it almost feels like the sidewall of the tire is hanging over the rim.

The whole reason why I went with these rims was to INCREASE the handling, my setup did the opposite!!

I went with almost 1inch bigger on the rims than my stock 19" setup, hoping that I could take turns harder and faster; now when I do its almost scary because the back end whips around a second later.

I really don't know what to do.. I've had these tires for not even a week and I'm hoping that maybe they just need to be broken in or something.

Perhaps you can evaluate my tire/rim setup and give me your input

Any words good or bad would be greatly appreciated!

Some sidewalls are very stiff giving quicker response from steering input. The wider wheels should help but they won't make a huge change even with the same tires.
Good point! I'll def check out the tire pressure, I don't know what those guys at the shop set it to.

To be honest, I wasn't even expecting the car to handle much better than how it did stock, but I DIDN'T expect it to be worse.

Hankook V12's were rated right under Michelin PS2's, but geez it feels like I got some generic no names on there!

just wait till tires break in. V12 is certainly not PS2 but it's very quite and nice tires for the price. So I hope you enjoys it. I love my CH-R 20s setup but not happy with Advan Sports tires and actually planning to switch to Hankook Evo V12 as I had good experience with those tires.

My Vreds were pretty slippery when new. It took a few hundred miles before they started to stick. And 295 is pretty wide for a 10" rim.

If you wanted to increase the handling you should have bought better tires! You get what you pay for. I run BBS CHR 19x9 255-35-19 19x10.5 295-30-19 Yokohama AD08 and this setup is way better than the factory Ps2. Buy better tires next time!

It does sound like you have the tyres under pressured...try 35 psi all round and see if that doesn't sharpen the turn in. Plus with new tyres the tread blocks are quite tall and with some makes of tyres they tend to move around under load...they should improve as they wear down.

As others said, I would check the pressure. Also, I got a new set of Michelin PS2s 2 weeks ago. They started gripping after a week of slipping around corners to wear the newness off. Hopefully with some air and some more driving, you will stick better!

PS2 is definately better then the V12. Hankook make some good budget tires but i wouldn't say they're high performance. Someone mentioned Yokohama AD08. You will notice a difference instantly with those.

Wow, was hoping real world experience with V12's was better. Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with them.

+1, AD08s are great, crazy good grip.

I have 295/30 on my 10" rears and they are great. Maybe the V12 has a lot of flex but not the AD08. 295 is within the recommended range for a 10" wheel.

If you have under 500 miles on the tires, I suggest you drive them some more and give us your impressions when they are broken in.

Also, 295 is too wide for a 10" rim. This shouldn't affect steering response since they are in the rear, but it is not an ideal setup for anywhere on the car. The OEM tires are stretched. These are stuffed on.

Finally, check your tire pressure.

Grip with the PS2 and the V12 should be very similar. In fact, in C&D's test, the V12 had more grip than the PS2. Steering response should come in as the tires wear in and you increase tire pressure. I don't know what to tell you about putting 295 on a 10", though.

i recently got my v12 put on my car. i went wider spec than stock. the initial feel of the tires were slippery...much like you described. I now have 400-500 miles on them and i sincerely feel that the tires are now how they should be. The handling is better, although not quite the same as the PS2's, however nonetheless very good in the turns.

the V12's, to me, were a cost effective tire and knew that handling was going to be slightly compromised.

I'm pretty sure the OP has 10.5" rear wheels for all of you saying that 295's are too wide for a 10" wheel. BBS only offers the CH-R's in 9" and 10.5" widths on both their 19" and 20" diameters. Seems like a typo by the OP.

What do you base this on?

No offense but you bought some crappy ass bargain tires and you're disappointed in their handling? Why are you surprised?

It never ceases to amaze me how people will spend $4,000 - $6,000 on a set of high quality rims and then throw on some garbage tires. That SCREAMS "I am ghetto fabulous". What's even stranger is that you don't have to overspend, either. You don't have to pay the absurd prices for PS2s when you can get a set of Vreds that perform just as well for less money. Or if you want even more performance you can spend ~$1,500 for a set of AD08s or RE-11s.

While a bit direct, you're right on the money. We advise customers about this each and every day.

Your M3 is held to the road by 4 small contact patches from the tires. Spend some time looking over the reviews at TireRack as well as here on the forums and pick a good performance tire if you really want to drive aggressive. PS2s, RE11a and AD08s (personal favorite) are all awesome performing tires.

Cheap tires will ruin an overall driving experience.

TireRack ranks the V12's pretty favorably. I think the OP just needs to use them a little longer.

- you went from +20 mm setup to a +40, probably increasing understeer
- 10'' is NOT too small for a 295, but 10.5 would indeed be better
- drive on the tires a little longer
- I do NOT believe in people saying that one tire will ruin the handling much more than another...achieve a skill level that is able to surpass the quality of your tires, and THEN start complaining they're not good enough. Many people put crazy tires on the car in weird sizes that do not respect the original diameter and are super grippy so they mask their mistakes and they believe the car handles better...sorry no. I am not saying that crappy tires are good and you should just put any tire on the car...no, but the V12s are by no means crappy.

My 2 cents
