Debating 2013 STI for DD and AutoX Duty

With finally getting a job (Just coming out of college), comes time to get a new car for DD and a AWD car. I currently drive and autocross a Z4M (RWD, 2 Door, Doesn't drive in winter)

Company policy requires a 4-door.

So, I was considering the thought of buying a '13 Subaru STI or WRX (don't really know which yet) and modding into STU. Sure as hell would be cheaper and easier to be competitive with that car versus my Z4M (RTR, AS, BSP and possible STR), and I don't have to worry about breaking anything on the M where it would cost twice as much. I would track the car as well (probably only once or twice a year). My thought is that the STI has a diff controller already, BBK, more boost...etc. It would be smarter to invest into a car like that rather than buying a WRX and adding this stuff later on.

The M would just be a weekend and summer car for me.

So anyone with valuable opinions please chime in. I was mainly concerned about the dreaded ringland failure. With an autocross car, and short gearing...I fear bouncing the car off the limiter, and blowing the car. I'm no foreign to stiff suspension. Even though I am on stock suspension with my M, it's progressive rates and torsional body ratings are fairly stiff. Probably will be running AST 4200 or similar suspension.

Going to test drive a STI Saturday, I will hop into a WRX as well probably. Mainly looking at the 5-door, I like them. Not looking to purchase until June-Oct of next year. Just thinking ahead.

Would consider a Evo X. But after I add HID headlights the price skyrockets. Not to mention I have to have leather in order to have heated seats....etc. Still considering this as an option as well.

Please and thank you in advance.

Fresh out of college with a Z4M and STI? Those are some generous parents you have!
Drive it, and get it if you like it and can comfortably afford it.

I owned a 2011 STI Sedan (same model as '13) for 18months and really enjoyed the car at first. It was fast(ish), looked great, handled well, but then my commute increased significantly from 12mi R/T to 90mi R/T and the glaring weaknesses started to show.

The radio is awful. A.W.F.U.L. Even with an aftermarket head unit, its still difficult to get over the road noise from the tires alone.
The seats are mediocre at best for daily driving. They are "sporty" but offer zero lumbar adjustment or side bolstering. When i sat into my 135's sport seats, it was night and day.
Everything creaks. All dash components, console, pillars ALL squeak/creak in any temperature outside of 70+/- 10*.
The cabin is loud in general. Even with the OEM stock exhaust (not even SPT, thats VERY loud), it droned a bit at highway speeds and there is very little sound deadening.

I was able to basically swap out of the STI into my lightly used 135 and wouldnt go back in a heartbeat. I tuned my STI to what the Subaru community considers stage2 with a set of coilovers, SSK and some other visual modifications and it was a fun car. I took a road trip with it from Boston to Atlantic City and it was a LONG trip with the stiff coilovers even biased to soft.

There is a lot of aftermarket available for the platform now, which is nice. You can make really good power out of the motors IF the ringlands hold up. I never popped one, but plenty of people are more than willing to share their heartache with the EJ25 motors.

Feel free to PM me and ill check back here if you want any more info.

You know me?

I finished paid off my car this summer. 3 Internships and selling my old car helped. Just because I'm young doesn't mean my income comes from my parents. Get real.

I get a set amount per month. Up to a certain amount, yes they will pay.

i wish my parents would buy me a Z4 and an STi.........

anyways, STi's are nice cars to drive at any time.

if Subaru would come out with an auto 6 speed tranny, we'd be driving two STi's....

Wow people, come on. He clearly stated that he was in charge of the costs of his M/previous car, and he doesnt have an STI yet anyways.

OP, im looking at trading my 335i in for a newish STI hatchback as well. I love the N54 but its gonna take some serious $$$$ to get the car where i want it to be. The STI only needs a coilover/tune, imo. Great brakes/LSD/exterior looks as it is.

Im hoping to test drive an STI soon. Please, let me know what you think!!!

It's not hard to properly allocate your funds. Do I sense some jealously?

I sold my 02 325xi for $9,500. Bought my M Coupe for $29k dropped at the driveway. That makes it $19.5k owed.

Working summer and winters, it's not an impossible feat to pay off the car. Did my dad help me pay for the car upfront? You bet. Is the title in my name now? Yes.

Continue to provide my amusement if you want.

ANYWAYS:

Drove the Evo today. Not impressed. Too big for my liking, turbo doesn't kick in til 4k....nothing that really wow'ed me

STi they would not let me drive because of weather. Bastards.

I'm going to see if I can get away with a 2 door. Thinking 128i with a STX build. Or 135i in STU?

They are cheaper than Evo and STi, and I can get CPO. Win win?

Wow, your parents must really love you, buying you a Z4M and Sti. You should be very appreciative. Good luck with the cars and at your new job!

Why not something less boy racer..? I have a Subaru myself but if you need something to haul clients around I assume because of job requiring 4-door. What about the new Ford Taurus SHO? 3.5V6, twin turbo, awd, 365hp/350 ft-lbs... I'm sure there will be some aftermarket performance available too.

+1

If your job is requiring you to have a 4 door car, a boy-racer car like an STI does not seem like its going to be suitable.

So how did you get your first BMW? Your parents right? Selling for 9500 that your parents originally bought.

What's the point of your question and why are you on e90post when you don't drive a e90 and are asking about an sti?

oh wow. You guys are really railing on him. He said he worked for it. Give him a break. Even if his parents helped him get his first car doesn't mean his accomplishments mean jack or he is any less. They are his parents, if they helped him financially that's fine. If not, than so be it.

With that flawed logic all of you better have paid your parents and made up for all the grief we caused as children and the countless expenses of having a child.

He should go ask on the ZM4 or STI forum. What's wrong with their community?

He already has his mind set on the STI, so I don't think there will be anything any of us that will say to him to convince otherwise. There is no other options that he is offering (other than the EVO, which he already shot down). So, it's a pointless self-bragging post to me.

You guys seriously need to stop bashing on this guy, this is what everyone on this forum does. They get jealous and bash on each other. As a BMW community, I like to think of us as educated individuals who like to learn and respect others. Thats the problem with people these days, we are too quick to judge. The OP seems like a smart kid, he is saving all his money and making his parents/ new job pay for his cars. Very smart kid indeed.
