Never use your torque wrench to remove or loosen bolts. It's not a breaker bar. It will take it out if torque spec.

OP - I use a breaker bar with an extension and a socket to remove and a torque wrench to install. I wouldn't use a tire iron unless you don't care if your wheel lug pockets get scratched (pet peeve of mine). An impact driver is great as well. Just be careful not to over torque - as stated by others.

I use kobalt corded impact wrench to remove lugs only, hand tight them when reinstalling with wheels still up in the air, have an object wedged between the ground and tire to prevent it from spinning, and finally use a torque wrench to tighten before dropping it back to the ground

I'm on the same boat with the folks who use an impact to remove the lugs and then a torque wrench to reinstall the lugs by hand.

Saves a bit of time and it keeps my impact from sitting around all the time

Not sure if you are kidding... What's the point of owning a torque wrench if it's out of spec? You might as well throw it in the trash. If there is a torque spec, it's there for a reason. It takes a whole 45 seconds to torque all your lugs, why not?

I torque my lugs every time. What I don't do is bring an extra tool to the track to break them loose. Not that concerned about it and would bet the spec of my 25 year old torque wrench is almost exact. At home I use impact to break them loose.

No point in bringing your torque wrench if it's out of spec. It's like using a ruler that is incorrect by a mystery amount; then proclaiming you are very particular about measuring every time with your incorrect ruler. What kind of effort does it take to bring along your breaker bar? I'm very disappointed in you. And I bet that your torque wrench is in fact out of spec

You should be I'm living wild and crazy! You really think a couple pounds will make the difference? There is that much error just in how hard you pull on the torque wrench anyways. Also mine is old spun collar adjustment so that portion isn't exact either. I'm not assembling a motor. Saturday I can test mine against another for your own peace of mind. If they fly off I will owe you a bottle of booze.

I use my broken measuring tape to measure my penis. It's huge.

I always use a breaker bar with a wheel lug socket with a protective sleeve to prevent any marring when taking it off. Then tighten by hand and torque it down with a torque wrench.

Protective socket like this:

Actually a pet peeve of mine is when people refuse to use turn signals. I don't even think turn signals are installed on cars in CA. An even larger pet peeve is how nobody in the midwest knows that the left lane is for passing only. Cruise control at the speed limit and park in the left lane. I want to get a huge truck and mow them off the road. Vigilante. But I digress...

A couple of pounds probably won't make a difference. However you don't need a torque wrench if you don't care. Just leave it at home, cave man.

I do care that my wheels are on sufficiently and check regularly. I don't care if they are 3 lbs off won't matter. I prepare quite a bit for the track and enjoy doing so.

I agree about the left lane. My pet peeve is people who can't think for themselves. What is the purpose of a said rule. If no one is there to signal to then the rule doesn't apply. I know I'm turning and don't need to tell myself. Each rule has an intended purpose behind it. If the situation arises where following the rule doesn't fulfill the purpose there is no reason to follow the rule, right.

Yes I am a cave man. I have heard it many times!
