Question Can someone comment on this purchase scenario?

Hi guys -

I've had a 08' 335i that I bought CPO two years ago, and I've loved every day of driving it. I've been tossing around the idea of upgrading to an M3, and recently got a chance to test drive one, and was really impressed.

So the following deal was presented to me:

The M3 I drove was a 2011 Grey Coupe, 7DCT, with the CF roof, Nav, Premium Package, and Comfort Access I believe. It was 18" wheels on it with brand new winter tires, and was a European Pickup car. It has roughly 15,500mi on it.

The dealer is looking for $53,675

On the + side, the car is low-mileage, I love the color/CF roof, and the black interior is also nice.

On the down side, I was REALLY looking for a ZCP, and I'm not a fan of the smaller wheels and winter tires (I'm in Texas currently...)

The dealership is willing to give me $21,000 for my 335i, against the $23,158 I still owe on it; making my total loan amount $56,022.80

How does this deal sound? I'm really on the fence. I'm not really in a hurry to get out of my current car, but I don't want to wait too long and lose the chance of getting a lower-mileage E92 M3.

Additionally - I asked for (and got) a carfax, it looks good, but when I requested that they get the service history from BMW, they didn't know how to go about doing that. Is that usually something I should look at? I'd like to know if this guy kept up with scheduled MX, etc.

Anything else a first-time (potential) M3 buyer should know?

EDIT: Also, another debate I'm having with myself is looking at higher-mile (20-30k mi) M3's in the Mid $40's, or lower (<20k mi) M3's in the low 50s. Which do you think is the better deal? Is 20-30,000mi that much for an M3?

So I just purchased a 2011 E92 M3 on Saturday for $52,250. To make things even more comparable, I'm in Texas and the car had just under 18k miles. Options are as follows:

- Melbourne Red
- Black Novillo
- DCT
- ZCP
- Nav/Tech Pkg
- Heated seats (not necessary in TX)
- Premium
- CF Roof
- Ind/Prem sound

Previous owner also installed a Dinan exhaust system.

I purchased this from an individual, so seeing the price on yours from a dealer looks good IMO. I'm sure I could have found a better deal eventually, but this was the result of about 2 months of searching. It had everything I was looking for, and the price was agreeable.

Brace yourself... Everyone on M3post is about to become a certified financial advisor.

I wouldn't consider a trade with negative equity on a car. Your money though...

Two version of 2011 models, better to get a post 9/10 build if you are into apps and bluetooth streaming. 18" tires are cheaper to replace . In Florida a $21k trade is really a $22,060 trade with the sales tax savings.

Sounds like a decent deal.

The price of the M3 seems reasonable.

I would take it in to BMW dealer for a full inspection. Also, when buying a used car from a random dealer, I would ask for the engine rev readings while the car is getting inspection done at dealer. There so many idiots out there who do ED and take the car out to autobahn with 5 miles on the clock and start driving at 135mph.

Sounds like a good deal if they full pay off your 335.

PS: Also, how does the dealer know that it was a ED car? There are only few things that are different on ED cars and most people have no idea what they are.

If the vehicle had its 1200 mile service in Europe, wouldn't that show?

I believe the European dealers are on a different network than US. That is why we have to pay for the 1200 service in Europe and BMWNA will reimburse you.

Also, most people don't drive their ED cars 1200 miles.

dealer is making a killing on both sides of this deal here. You should narrow AT LEAST $3000 combined on both sides (trade and/or new sale) before seriously considering doing the trade.

I would negoitiate on this first. Tell him, you don't care how it's distributed between both parts on their books, but you need to get some $ off. The M3 part is about $1500-$2000 overvalued.

Here's a quick comparable for used M3 prices, someone just got a 2011 DCT coupe for $50k including fees. (not sure if he had a trade or finance, but $50k is fair.)

Just recently purchased a 2011 e92 M3 in NJ with 23.5k miles. Has the following:
CF roof
Fox red interior
DCT
ZCP wheels
Premium Package
Cold Weather Package
EDC
Comfort Access
Auto high beams

Got them to toss in two sets of floormats (bmw regular floormats and M floormats). Total price was $52,375 OTD. Might have helped that I had a car that they really wanted (2012 Audi TT-RS). They ended up paying that off and giving me a little cash too.

Any BMW dealer can do a 'key read' where they do just that, and can read and print out the service history. It takes them maybe a few seconds and if you seem like you might become a service customer, they should do it for free.

And I would definitely look at the service history.

Good luck.

+ This.

I looked a few used M3s before going new and I was surprised by the number that were poorly or incorrectly cared for (mostly missed break-in mile service).

What is different on a US bound, ED car?

Some very basic clues are

ED cars come with First Aid kits, emergency triangles and the floor mats on the ED cars do not say "BMW" on them.... they are solid. If you have the build sheet or the VIN breakdown, it will have a code for tourist delivery. Also on the window sticker, it will say "tourist delivery" with the original owners last name.

Hope this helps....

Agree with those above - negative equity is usually a non-starter. How far off KBB are they? Most dealers balk at matching KBB, but it's at least a frame of reference. The quoted price on the m3 is already on the highish side (though not far off).

Sell your car private party, and make money on it - not lose it. That elminates some of your loss.

Then as to the price on the actual car itself, it's not bad but i'm not thrilled with it. Especially since this car isn't exactly the one you want, I would hold out.

Also, someone above made a very good point - WHEN the car was built in 2011 is very important. There are 3 variants (not two). The 2011 model, the 2011.5 model (updated to include combox, bluetooth audio, one-wire ipod integration via usb port, M Button on steering wheel can be programmed to include additional drivers preferences, automatic start/stop, premium package (ZP2) now includes power front seats, convenience package replaces technology package) and the 2011.75 model (also adds BMW Apps). So shoot for at least a 2011.5. Probably makes an impact on resale value (and more importantly, value to you).

That would be a great deal if the '11 was CPO. Also try to have them pay off the 335 loan.

Keep your 08' 335i for while longer. More 2010 or 2011 may become available once the new M3/M4 generation comes on the market.

If you do this you will be able to pick up something better for less money.

$52k includes tax and fees? if so, that's a good price, but can you quote us price excluding tax but including all dealer fees?

The dealership ate the tax when they paid off my Audi, so I didn't pay any tax. The price for the car was $51,995 + $300 doc fee + $75 Registration transfer fee. They gave me $52k for the TT-RS (owed a little less than that, so that actually went towards the M3).

I'm going to be posting a detailed comparison soon, after I get my car detailed!
