Help-Power Steering pump replacement problem!!

Okay guys...need help here. I had the car serviced for new power steering lines at an auto shop before picking up my car when i purchased it. After about 1,500 miles the power steering pump started to whine a lot. So i decided to flush the power steering fluid. Well that didn't fix! since it was bought as is...i can't take it back especially since it sat all winter and time went by...

Well i decided to swap out the pump that i got brand new from ECS, got new compression washers, marked the bolt to make sure the holes lined up with the line and i installed the new pump.

i started the car and the steering wheel is stiff as a board. I removed the cap to the power steering reservoir and it was still full. Nothing was moving inside at all...making me realize the pump wasn't working.

I took everything apart again today to inspect the belt, pulley and all the bolts and everything looks fine. started all up and the power steering pulley was spinning just fine.

Now i am stumped...is it a bad pump? Or am i missing something?

After attaching all the lines, i added fluid to the reservoir. it emptied on its own, so i added more. Once it stopped draining, i filled it to the top and i put the car on jack stands. I then turned the key to the on position, I turned the wheels left to right multiple times. The fluid bumbled out of the reservoir and then it finally settled in the full range.

Took the car for a drive and man that wheel felt like a ton...

So i did the same thing again..but once i lowered the car and started it...the wheel felt the same. So i left if for the night..

Call dealer parts and provide. Vin and they will tell you the correct part number. There are two listed for 2008s.

Can i just look at both parts backside...and see if the part stamp is identical.

Well i am going to be removing my new pump as of right now...i'll be installing my old one. It whines but i know it still works. I just want to make sure it's the pumps fault and not air in the lines or steering rack.

After your experience I'd buy new even though it might cost double. Heard fcpeuro has lifetime warranty on all parts. Check it out

Well i took the advice from another member that posted and called the dealership. I checked the part with my vin number and got the correct power steering pump number.I ordered a brand new orginal pump..since this pump is for the older m3 model it isn't in stock and has to be shipped from Germany.

Also i will be doing a DIY, cause i literally now can swap pumps in less then an hour now lol

Harry, any pro tips on this job? I see you got bit by the early 2008 pump ccw vs cw rotation issue.

It’s sad when I have a warranty to cover this, but every time someone other than me touches this car they cause more harm than good.

This is awesome. At some point I will have to replace my power steering pump too, so I will be looking out for your DIY. My production date is also 1/2008, so this is perfect.

You are going to be unable to get the pump you need. BMW no longer has or makes them. If they told you otherwise then the pump that shows up will not work again like none of mine did. It takes about $1500 in additional parts to change the whole pulley system and oil filter housing over to the post 2008 setup.... BMW doesnt really tell anyone this and has made me want to sell all my m3's

We are resorting to buying a few underdrive pulleys and going to see if we can make something work that way via single sided belt system.

The reason your new pump didnt work is because your pulley/belt layout was spinning it backwards do to them going from CW to CCW rotation and from double sided belt to single.

your car came with / needs a pump ending in 041 and the only pumps available now are 002 and 003. I bought a new one from BMW, a remanned one from Bosch and both are same.

Been without car now for a month and have found a dozen other people with same issue. I dont care what any "expert" says there are really one two options here and getting the correct pump is not one of them unfortunately.

Some people we called acted like it was obvious and we should have know about it but then failed to mention we would also need to change oil filter housing after seeing what all parts we had listed to change. This leads me to believe they might not really know?

Funny you mention this. I ordered my new pump for my 02/08 build and got the right one the first time. Swapped the pump, bleed the system and everything is working perfectly. Strange you're having issues.

Also agree it's unfortunate to be having issues. I can't believe there are so many who claim to have their cars down over this. I can order the correct pumps anytime.

The only difference in the oil filter housing is the old one has an offset idler pulley and the newer one does not.
