Smaller and thinner tires are best for winter anyway, you should go with a smaller 17 or 18 wheel

19's is so much more expensive in rare winter tire sizes

You are absolutely correct about thinner tires working better. But, trust me that the 19 inch tires work AWESOME in a Chicago winter.

I would have a hard time driving my car around for 1/3 of the year on crummy looking 17's

The factory 18's don't look too bad, but try buying a set... they sell fast, and at a premium. Honestly, it seems easier and cheaper to buy an additional set of slightly used factory 19's for a summer set. This, and the car looks great year-round!

17s won't clear the brakes on our cars. I like my 18s but honestly wouldn't have a problem going with 19s in the right tire if I had some cheap wheels (otherwise just gets too expensive in 19 size.)
