I noticed that a couple of the replies about speeding are from Canada. You guys should never set foot in South Florida as the average speed on the turnpike and I-95 in the left lane is above 85-90 mph at all times. The speed limit varies from 65-70. As far as OP, you should definitely fight the ticket.

Canadians have been beaten into submission with ridiculous speed limits. My wife is Canadian and we go back to Calgary every once in a while. I have a hard time keeping to the limit in her dad's base model Toyota Rav-4. The M3 would land me in Canadian prison.

Thanks for the reply guys. I know that the points don't carry over. My real question was if it would cost more monetarily to fight it or just pay it. The court is a two hour drive from NY. Also, since the record will stay in NJ, will it affect me insurance wise?

Get a good traffic attorney and you likely won't have to do anything except make a few phone calls and write a couple of checks (maybe go to a class). Chances are good it will get dropped to almost nothing.

For what it's worth, it recently happened to me in NC (with a PA license) and the first thing I did was talk to a lawyer. My first offense, so all I need to do is take a Defensive Driving class. Of course add that to the cost of the lawyer and the fees, well worth it if you ask me. You gotta pay to play, it's how they make money.

I was in a situation like this on NJ turnpike (93 mph in 55 mph zone) back in the day. I had to show up for 2 court hearings and the prosecutor made me an offer - higher fine (around $450) for zero points. I took that offer and that was the end of it.

Anyway, OP you wont get points but if you dont pay the fines you are going to have a warrant in NJ. Pay it and make sure that Escort is working properly.

The Escort was for sure working because it was detecting K bands from cameras and also X bands during the drive. I have no idea why it didn't go off until it was too late, or maybe I didn't slow down in time; I'm not sure. Did the officer do an instant on?

Fortunately, I just had a speeding ticket which was $275 and they bumped it to $450. You should fight the ticket as beyond a certain speed, I think NY state hits you with a special assessment or surcharge even if one got the speeding ticket out of state (my colleague was doing 90+ in work zone on a Sunday in PA but somehow it showed up in his records)


What did it show up as on your record after this?

My record was clean. I also get speeding tickets in Ohio (I often drive to Ohio during the holidays and the jerks in Ohio enjoy giving tickets for doing 74 mph in 65 mph). I pay them and they never show up on my record.

This was my first violation, keep that in mind. So far I paid the lawyer $500 and then paid $60 to register for the class. Once I am done with the class and get a certificate, the lawyer told me I will probably owe some more for court fees, etc., but I haven't finished paying probably.

This is true. And it has gotten worse only in the last couple of years. Not too long ago you could easily follow a small convoy on the highway doing 100+ mph.

In Quebec, they recently introduced a new law on excessive speeding, where the points and fines are doubled for a first offence, tripled for a third offence and it stays on your record for 10 years. Worse, is that they keep drastically reducing speed limits everywhere. We are constantly getting brainwashed everywhere on how speed kills and that we need to slow down.

So we now have very slow and dense traffic (if you slow down traffic, you increase its density, it's mathematical) moving around with people talking on the phone, texting, drinking, eating, shaving or putting on make-up as they are driving. It's funny, I don't feel that much safer .

Scenario #1:

A 79 year old guy with mild dementia is driving a 15 year old pick-up truck that has worn tread and barely passes inspection. It is raining and there is a good amount of traffic. He is going 62 in a 65 zone.

Scenario #2:

A 37 year old enthusiast, fully alert and concentrating, is driving his well maintained 3 year old M3 at 100 in a 65 on a deserted highway, early in the morning in dry sunny conditions.

I contend that driver #2 is less of an overall safety risk than driver #1.

I'm telling you from experiance. No points transfer nor your insurance will increase. Rembere 3rd strike in 3 years your privileges to drive in that state is gone. Enjoy the car and slow it down jersey troopers are slick when it comes to hiding.

Completely agree. Jerzy troopers take their job to the tenth power. They will f*kn hide anywhere. And they love to lase.

When your court date is set you will get a chance to speak to the prosecutor. Give them your story (tell em you never speed, you had a stomach ache, this is your first time and it was a mistake etc) and then they'll give you the plea. Once they give you the plea they will make you plea guilty to another lower offense. Either way you will be paying round up $500. this is why it doesn't make sense o go get a lawyer. you pay him plus his fees and your still in the $500 park.

^^^ a lawyer is gonna get you the same plea deal. So if you hire a lawyer he will charge you 500 and then he will tell you I got you a plea deal and all you have to pay is 500 that puts you at 1000 bucks. A few days after your ticket was issue you'll probably get letters from a few lawyers offering to help you. Ignore it and go your self tell the prosecutor you wanna make a plea deal and that's it just pay 500 and your good to go. The only thing jersey wants is your money! Wish we had plead deals here in nyc that will be awesome!! Guess the city makes enough money from our parking officers and there little scanners. ( reason why my barcode is covered I wanna make them work for that ticket. Let them type everything in!
