Is it too badly damaged to get plugged & patched?

Not sure what that means, but if it's just a small puncture in the tread area, it can be repaired without a problem.

Absolutely. Only tire dealers tell you to replace it ; that's absolute crap. No tire is going to spit a patch even at top speed (and much less blow up). And if it did, TPMS would alert you with plenty of advance notice. It's not like you'd lose all your air in 10 seconds. Having said that, if you get anything other than a small screw/nail puncture, or a puncture in the sidewall, it definitely needs to be changed. The other issue that would require tire replacement even with the smallest of punctures is if you don't stop immediately after TPMS alerts you of low air pressure (30psi). If you wait until tire is too low, you chew up the sidewall, and tire is toast.

if your tires are still fairly new, get a new one.
if you would have to replace them soon anyway, get whatever you want, but not from the dealer

I would not mix and match. If the other rear tire is nearly new, you can get away with one matching. If all four are ready to go, you can go with whatever you want. 2 and 2 is a crapshoot: sometimes it's fine, sometimes it feels unstable/unpredictable. If you go with two of another brand, be prepared to buy the other two if it doesn't feel right.

If he drove on it after going nearly flat, though, then it is not repairable.

talk about flat tires, here's mine from 2 weeks ago, left front and rear. I hit a piece of metal from an expansion joint on a bridge. It sheared right through the sidewalls, a pretty clean cut. good thing they were my old ones from last year that I started the season on to extract the maximum mileage. oh well, replaced the 4 of them with another set of RE-11's. great tires! I had to get my rear wheel fixed, the guy did a great job, it looks brand new.

The 1st pic is the rear and the 2nd is the front.

I recently got a small nail in my rear PS2. I was my rears only have like 2k miles, lucikily it wasn't in a hard to fix area and had it patched.

Advice: If the tire is relatively new than have them patch it from inside, do not plug it that will most likely leak and will have you running to the station to fill with air.

If the tire is worn than sure would get it replaced, again depends on the wear.
