Canceled S4 Order. Ordering E92!
Well, I ordered an Audi Exclusive Sepang Blue Pearl S4 on November 17th. Fast forward three months to late February. Not only do I not have the car, but I still don't have a build date.
I've been back and forth with my wife about allowing me to keep the S2000 and get an M3. The S4 was going to replace the S2000. I didn't want to put 20,000 miles a year on the M3, and the S4's practicality advantage over the M3 made me try to buy it. So I can't sleep last night, I log onto M3Post and see the video from top gear of the M3 spanking the RS5. Even with the APR tune and exhaust and Stasis suspension; the M3 is still going to be a better car that the S4. I woke up this morning, put the hard sell on to the wife, canceled the S4 order (they completely understood that I wasn't willing to wait 9 months to get my car), sent email to David Aviles to get the PCD order started. I guess I won't have to lurk around here unwanted any longer. I'm ordering Le Mans w/ Competition Pkg. |

Congrats. I have mine on order for a May build and will be doing an ED. I will be putting 20-25K miles on it per year, and with the lease rates they have now, and only $0.15/mi for additional mileage, it was very hard to pass on the M3. Not sure if you're buying or leasing, but either way, congrats.
I looked at the S4 as well, and optioned how I wanted it, compared to the ED price on an E90 optioned my way, the price difference was $5K, and for the lease (considering BMW's service versus paying extra for Audi Care), the total difference for out of pocket after 36 months was around $3K. Easy decision (I don't need awd traction where I live). Like you I also have an S2000 (AP1). It's a fantastic car. One of the last "modern" cars that are simple and easy to work on. |

Good choice. FWIW, the December Consumer Reports reliability survey - which was critical of all the major German prestige brands (except Porsche) - with Audi last in ratings among Merc/BMW/Audi - although just below BMW - assessed that the M3 was BMW's most reliable model and well above average (ie up there w/ the better Japanese). Second, I know of some fellow M3'ers who are putting 20k+ / year on their M3s. I'm running around 13k / yr now I added a 335d as a back-up. Last, the M3, for a sporty car, has a reasonably supple ride - better than the 335d on runflats - as long as the EDC setting is not on Sport mode. Good luck w/ your wait: it's worth it!

I salute you!!!!!! Takes a brave man to walk away from something he desires.... but trust me your going to enjoy what your now walking towards. You can always look at the S4 albeit in your rear view mirror shuddering from the turbulence when you tank past it (legally of course) |

You'll be very happy with the M.
I was looking around and was very close to buying the Audi S5, and then something must have hit me on the head, because I went and bought an E92 M3 |

Good move.
A co-worker is getting an S4, I seriously don't understand why? It is so close to E90 M3 in terms of price, why would any one want to buy something significantly slower?

I'm obviously not debating the M3's abilities as I always favored it over the S4. It's the overall practically of the S4 that intrigued me. Its small blown 3.0 V6 is quite a bit more efficient. Not to mention, the interior(sorry) is worlds better. I think coming from a raw sports car like the S2000, I will like the feel of the M3 much better. Plus, I've always, always wanted an M3 going back to the first E36 I drove when I was 19 selling car stereos. It's just going to take some time to get used to BMWs "wet noodle" shift linkage coming from one of the very best manual transmissions ever built. The Audi's MT has a much more mechanical feel than M3. The thing that sucks is I put a deposit down on the tune and have exhaust, a dozen oil filters, rear license plate LEDs, and short shifter sitting in my garage that I'm going to have to sell. I'm just going to buy the S4 as a daily driver when the S2000 gets to 200,000 miles. |

I think you made the right choice!
Keep the Audi parts and get an used one in couple years. Wet noodle shifter actually works well, I was always confused why C&D liked teh BMW shifters. Now I know. It will grown on you.

if its any consolation i owned an Audi A5 before my M3, the 3.2 V6 looked gorgeous, inside and outside, better than the M3 on the inside at least but i hated driving it zero steering feel, horrible gearbox (manual) i sold it after only 6 months and got the M3 haven't looked back since you will understand the first time you drive YOUR M3 |
